Are my Barred Rocks Roosters?

when they were young i was hoping for pullets but now just about all are looking like roosters.

My Barred Rock pullets looked just like that at 3 weeks, some had pink combs and some didn't, there were no roos in the bunch though. I did buy a few cockerels when they were 5 weeks old and they were quite a bit lighter than the pullets at the same age, plus the pullets have a dark splash on the front of the legs but the cockerels have a brighter yellow leg with very little or no black on them... I hope that helps.

Did you say you bought them at straight run?

I've heard that some hatcheries (I'm sorry, I don't know where you got yours at, but I'm just guessing...) fool people into thinking newly hatched chicks go right into the straight run area as soon as they are hatched. What I've heard from a couple people is that the 'straight run' chicks are the chicks that the sexing people aren't sure of. If the vent looks like it may be a cockerel but isn't so profound as others it goes into the straight run bin. I think I saw a documentary on it as well on the Discovery channel...

Needless to say, after I watched that I wasn't too sure I wanted to buy straight run from a hatchery anymore.

I can't tell by looking at them, but my 3 wk old tomorrow BR pullet chickies JUST started trying to tuck their heads under their wing when they sleep, and the roos don't bother -- they lay their heads on the pullets!!
