Thank you. This is very helpful. My chicks are in a box in the kitchen and they are between three weeks and five weeks old. I'm scared to even put them in the basement because I am afraid they will be too cold.
I'm new at this chicken stuff, but my grandparents & their siblings were all old-time farmers. Their chickens were all "organic" free range chickens that got no special care. They opened the chicken coop doors at daylight & shut them at dark after shelling a few cobs of feed corn for them. Chicks were hatched by hens & with the other chickens from day one. I got my babies, kept them in the guest room in a storage tub for 2 weeks. No lights or heat source. They've been in the coop at night & outside all day since the first one escaped the tub & popped all over the guest room! LOL. It's been from the 40s to the 70s at night & from the 60s to the 90s days. They are all thriving! And Keith, my stray rooster is getting a lot friendlier to me! LOL
