I was on vacation for 5 days and my eggs did not get collected. I have a hen that sits on them intermittently but I can't tell if there are embryos inside or not. Are they safe to wash and put away or should I throw them away? I am in New Hampshire, it's fairly cool outside (40's) and I know they are not being sat on regularly. Please Help!!

If you have doubts about some eggs, just crack them one at a time in a separate bowl. I've never found any bad ones, but sometimes it's reassuring!

Can't you just candle them and make sure they are clear? But then it does depend on what your weather has been. I'm in Tucson and I'm sure, even if not fertile, they have been sitting for 5 days that I would not eat them or give them to anyone else

My aunt used to break eggs into a small dish before she used them. She did this even with store eggs long after she no longer had chickens. You can do that.
