I am a Californian born and raised Dad was from the south.... One of his favorite dinners was Okra sliced up and cooked with stewed tomatoes... Then stirred into a bowl of grits and topped with Bacon pieces... Salt and pepper.... I love it that way

But by far the best okra is just as you describe it... tossed in Corn meal and fried in Bacon grease... Oh yum...

Grew up eating okra that way and that way only. My DH had only had it in stews, slimy. I love fried okra.

Oh, we've only eaten one mean cockerel. My boys are super sweet, but if we get one of the exceptions, he can become stew as well. Can't pass on that nasty temperament to the future. My old hens live out their lives in Chicken Shangri-La. I probably couldn't have meat birds. We get attached to all of them.
