hey backyardchickens! so i have a question... are you allowed to keep coturnix quail in Arizona? we are moving there soon and i want to bring some of my birds with me. is it legal to keep them there? my cousin said i could probably sneak them in as they're quail everywhere, but i would prefer to keep it legal. (that does not mean i still wont sneak them in, as i love them very much) but any advice on this would be great. also is there anyone in southern California who would want some quail?

Check the county you are moving to and the laws on gamebirds. That’s the best way to know. Also it can be different if you will be within a town or city limits or outside and in unincorporated areas which usually just go by county laws.

I've found that often, Coturnix aren't actually covered by the law. They'll have laws on gamebirds, but coturnix aren't actually gamebirds. [EDT: not in PA, Ohio, or Virginia, anyway. Might want to check that] They'll have laws on poultry, but poultry is defined as geese, ducks, chickens.

I would contact my county extension office and ask. Unless you're moving to the inner city, I doubt it will be a problem.

Can you ask at the Arizona thread?

I wouldn’t even really worry I mean people even keep them as pets in the house I doubt anyone will care they don’t even make noise. I would keep them, unless in the city like above.

I would check with game and fish also as well as city/county regulations. In NM I was told that permits would be required if I was going to have over 12 or if I was going to be selling birds or eggs but even that was only about $20.00

Yes you can keep coturnix quail in AZ. Game birds like the bobwhite require a permit, but coturnix aren't considered game.
