Are the baby chicks suppose to sleep like this?

I'm sorry, I worded that incorrectly. I meant start them out at 95 degrees then every week decrease the temperature 5 degrees till around 5 weeks old. I actually have a big water trough that I put sand in the bottom of, then I put the heat lamp on one side so they can get heat how they need it by moving away or toward the heat lamp.

Oh good.. I was so confused for a second until I read your reply! If someone were the keep temps at 95 with 5 week olds they would die of overheating! Thanks for clearing up the confusion!

What is this butterfly shape feathers springing in my Ameraucana chick?

If this is a rooster, can anyone help me on how to solved the problem? Rooster aren't allowed in my urban area. I lived in Caldwell, Idaho. I found a rooster collar on mypetchicken.com and should I buy one?

This just looks like regular feathering to me. They come in kind of patchy sometimes. Ours are 5 weeks old, and one still just has a stripe of feathers on its back surrounded by fluff haha. As for whether it's male or female....posting in the "what breed or gender is this" section is helpful. It may be too young to tell, though. But. You'll need good pictures of its face (so people can see the comb). At this age they still have a lot of changing to do, and they change fast. Hopefully your chicks are pullets.

So, I am sorry to upset you poultry lovers and animal lovers but the two chicks are doing really good. My Ameraucana is now 3 weeks old and my Amber White is now 4 weeks old. Right now, what I am concerned about is my Ameraucana. I don't the gender yet but it possibly look like a rooster and I'm scraed. Last 2 years, I lost my Rhode Island red rooster to my neighbors complaining and so if m Ameraucana is a rooster, I'm going to see what I can do. I will post a picture later tonight with color draw into it so you guys can see what I mean't. Do you guys know what to do if my neighbors complain again about the rooster crowing? Hey, nobody is born knowing how to take care of baby animals, we all had to learn

As for the no crow collars, I've heard mixed reviews....but after working in a tech field for a while, I tend to assume user error haha. If our keeper male starts crowing before we move, we'll be trying a no crow collar on him. Figure it'll at least turn the volume down a bit.

You just need to ignore all the posters who see an old thread and decide you need to be yelled at. Saddly until your thread is buried deep in the void of chatroom space, you will continue to get them. You made an error, corrected it, and now have some happy healthy chickens, so ignore them. I have lost many more chicks then you, I promise

Thanks! But I'm just concerned about the rooster collar. I've heard bad and good news and the bad news is their roosters choke or somehow died from it and the good news is they have good experience with it. I just don't know which side to take. I found these reviews on Amazon.

Hi RedBreasted - glad things are going well. Just want to follow up mentioning a challenge I am going to have along with you in introducing the new young birds into the existing flock. I have heard it is tricky and if not done correctly doesn't end well for the new birds. Perhaps experienced members can give us some tips. Here is what I have heard: wait until your chicks are about 5 months and fully grown, introduce in the night - bring them into the coop when the existing flock is asleep, it is good if you can have them seeing each other but separated for a while before merging - like if you had your run segmented off or had your new birds in their own run or cage. Any other feedback welcome. Just wanted RedBreasted to be aware this can be tricky or your big birds will kill the young ones, so I have heard.

Yes introductions can be brutal, but that is not how I would do the introduction. I would just wait until they are 4 weeks (able to live outside) put the chicks in a cage out in the coop, it is important they can see\hear each other but not touch. Then after a a couple of weeks, allow them to meet. Make sure you have a separate food and water dish away from view of the main dish and plenty of room for the younger chicks to escape.
