Hi everyone, I just wanted to ask a question about mites. How the heck can you tell when they’re gone? I got a rescue with a really bad mite issue, and I’m unsure if it has been solved.
Mites are very hard to control or get rid of. They are much smaller than lice, but may be seen as slow moving brown specks under the vent and elsewhere. Certain mites (the red poultry mite) come out on the chickens only during the night time, then go back into the cracks and dark spaces during the daylight hours. Other mites (northern fowl mite) may be seen all of the time on chickens. What have you been using for treatment? Permethrin liquid for spraying, or the garden dust is available online and in farm stores. Here are my 2 favorite links on mites and lice, explaining where to look, how to identify which type you have, how to tell mites from lices, etc: https://anrcatalog.ucanr.edu/pdf/8162.pdf
