Are there any Chicken to Human transferrable illnesses?

Oh great. That's disgusting..

My dogs are that way too. They are not to lick us in the face any more, but before they were. I have one dog that licks my feet, but I'm sure that's not going to bother my digestive tract. Unless you know something I don't

My pitbull was a puppy at the time and she would just lick and lick. She got me in the mouth once when I was talking - horrible. So I was really freaked out because I knew she had licked my face and now she had worms. BLEH! All turned out fine though and all involved are worm free with a simple treatment. And, no more licking.

There are lots of ways that you can get sick from doing just about anything.

WIth birds, just like anything else, you just need to be clean and aware. If both you and your birds live in good, clean conditions and you are good about looking for signs of illness then I don't think you need to be overly paranoid. A lot of disease, like avian flu come from chickens and people living in the same space in bad conditions.

The more different animals you have the more you need to be aware of their interaction, I, like aoxa had a possible chicken to dog to people scare. I brought home a chicken with round worm. I should have quarantined her first but I was new to chicken and didn't (totally my fault), thus all of my chickens ended up with round worm and my dogs ate chicken poop so my dogs ended up with round worm.

According to my vet round worm can't go from chicken to person but can go from chicken to dog to person. How does that work? No idea. I did not end up with it but I was freaked out. Try to remember to wash your hands and don't let your dogs lick your face. I love my dogs but they are disgusting.
Well, our dogs give us kisses all the time, but never on the face. I'm glad you took your dog to the vet and I will keep that in mind!! Our dogs definitely like to 'eat stuff' in the grass so I think they'll probably like chicken poo too...yuck. One more thing to fret about lol!

I don't have any chickens :)  I have a LOT of hatching eggs though, that I've been handling a lot (turning them and putting them in the bator, etc)...was wondering if I could catch something from the bloom on the eggshells...but apparently not.  I really hate being diagnosed with OCD because it affects everything. :(

Thank you for putting my mind at ease. There's no problems at all (thus far) with my gut...everything in that department is a-okay.  It's in my throat, sinuses and chest..plus body aches all over the place but the doctor said that's just from the temperature.  Get the temp down, the aches will subside so I guess I'll try that.

Whatever you have, it's just a cold/flu and not from the eggs. Sorry your feeling sick! Unfortunately it's that time of year again :(

Despite me telling you that terrible story it is pretty hard for you to get sick from your chickens. Very unlikely. I hope you feel better.

Thank you everyone. :) I know this is the first place I will come to if my chickens (when they hatch) ever get sick! I also knew that since most of you actually own chickens - you'd know the answers to this question as well. Thanks again!

How far are you into your incubation? You must be excited :) What are you incubating? :pop

Clutch 1: Only 4 of the 18 I started with are viable and all 4 are frizzle project eggs. Most of them are small but 1 in particular is my favorite and it's very large egg (I won't know breed until they hatch and grow a little). I made a lot of mistakes (this is my first hatch) so that's why a lot of them went rotten I think. :(

Clutch 2: Arrived yesterday and went in the bator this afternoon. Swedish Flower Hens, Barred Rocks, RIRs, Welsummers, and some others I don't remember what they are. I will be raising whatever hatches from those miscellaneous ones until they're 2 months old and then sell them. I only ordered them because I was hoping just for 1 Golden Lakenvelder egg but unfortunately did not get one :(( It was miscellaneous breeder's choice and I didn't luck out on the golden.

Clutch 3: I am participating in a swap with another board member who is becoming a very good friend to me. :) She's bringing me some Norwegian Jaerhon eggs and I'm giving her some Swedish Flower Hen eggs.

Clutch 4: My other friend (not the one above) hasn't told me yet when she's driving up, but she is bringing me some hatching eggs of a Russian Orloff/Tolbunt Polish/Swedish Flower hen cross. Those should be very pretty.

Somehow I have to limit myself to 6 total hens, so I'm picking only my most favorite breeds and having 1 of each. I'm down to 1 more selection and I have no idea what that will be yet. =]

No Easter Eggers? After getting my first BLUE egg, I can't imagine going back. I like having eggs in all colours. I would keep a Marans (chocolate brown), a Barred Rock (Medium brown), a pure Ameraucana (Blue eggs), a Houdan (white), a Olive Egger (Olive), and a Silkie (cream).

1000

I have green layers growing up now. I have every colour BUT the chocolate eggs. It's on my wish list!!

We eat eggs so frequently in this house that they're gone before I could possibly have time to enjoy the color of the egg, lol! I have to admit though...your egg carton contents certainly are pretty! I'd like to have an easter egger but since I'm limited to 6 hens total, I just can't have all the ones I'd like to have. If that were the case I'd have 32. lol!

I'm about ready to pick a different breed to replace my Golden Lakenvelder hen-dream though...because I'm striking out on that one every single time. I had the opportunity to get a 6 mo healthy rooster, but we can't have roosters here so that opportunity "flew the coop" so to speak.

I'm thinking I may go Jubilee instead.

As a side note---anyone know how to get a fever down? I'm sitting at 103.4 now (stupid thing keeps going up) and Tylenol and warm showers aren't doing anything thus far...my eyeballs feel like they're going to blow out the front of my face though!
