Are these African goslings?

Backyard breeder refers to people who house animals in cages and over breed and add to the pet population. They don't spay or neuter and breed the animal til it's dead or until it can't produce anymore. They are the ones who provide dogs to pet stores that turn around and sell Yorkies for $2000. Most of these animals are inbred for size purposes. And the animals are abused!!!
I really hope that isn't going on with anyone here!!!!!
Oh, like puppy farms.
Going by the way folks on this forum worry about their birds, I´d very much doubt if anyone does farming of this nature. Backyard to me simply means folks that have animals and birds at home and breed them from time to time. Personally speaking, I neuter all my animals, even the pure-breds, as there are more than enough unwanteds to go around. I don´t do this with the birds, of course, but they free-range in my 'backyard'/land. And sometimes I let them breed. I think most folks on here are more or less like that.

Yes like puppy mills.

Dang that's rough!!!!
No, it´s ok once you know. Geese, ducks, and other poultry all survive here. Geese, totally out of their natural environment, but they do ok if the breeders are aware of their needs. Muscovies, of course, totally at home!

Sorry, I am literally Doctor Mom here. I do basic medical and first aide for 2 boys that beat each other up, 6 dogs, 5 cats (we lost 1 a few days ago, had to euthanize as she had kidney cancer and only 1 kidney, R.I.P. ShadowKat), the chickens, ducks, and geese. So I learn as much about each species/breed as I can to do the best I can for them. I mainly triage, if it's within my skil set, I will doctor at home as I can give IP, IM, and IV injections, as well as minor stitching of wounds. Having my sister helps with slightly more worse cases, but I have taken animals to the vet. Unfortunately no avian vets near me, so my flock has to rely on me 100% for all their care.

Hate it when I know the answer but can't think of it, lol. Brain farts are the worst!

Starfire, how is the wobbly gosling today? I trust the brain is gas-free now?

Strange comment, this is a backyard breeder forum.
Starfire, it was Speceider´s post that I read to mention about choline.
And I also did the same as you with my chickens..I had some Brahmas I bought, not from hatcheries, there aren´t any here that produce particular breeds that I know of, just the ones for egg production and meat (mixes), but I wanted to improve them, so I bought a beautiful big cockerel for a lot of money to try to improve what I have here.  And my geese I´ve found from 3 different sources, and I´m trying to get to the third generation so they have a good mix in their genes for strong birds, pieds in one group, and auto-sexing in the others.   :D
Good plan.  Look forward to seeing the results!

The more I think about it, the more I want to get white Africans. They simply don't exist here. Not only would it improve my stock, but my culls would be sellable to other breeders for new blood in their flock as well. I need to ask Utah if I can get eggs from 2 Un-related pairs. Keep a male and female, sell the rest and then add my brown Africans to the white ganders harem. And while brown Chinese do exist here, they are all from the same hatchery, so getting some eggs from 8, and doing a mix and match with my flock of white Chinese, then selling the rest would also benefit me and my area. Guess I need to study up more on goose breeding, incubating and what not to make this happen. Guess that means I better not get too much more attached to my flock, as half would have to be sold or slaughtered for the table to make room for new blood. But that's something that every breeder has to face.

I also am getting into breeding Siberian Huskies. My male is from show lines, my female is not but is beautiful. I am getting their eyes and hip scores before breeding them, which means first litter when my female, Dawn, is 3 years old, and my male, Phantom is 2 years old. I am tired of seeing sad, sick Siberians for sale in my area. I want to show these people how responsible breeders of quality dogs do it. And well, I LOVE Siberians! My female will have 1 litter a year or year and a half, and will only have 3 litters tops. After the 3rd litter, quality of the pups drops and risks to the mother go up, not risking my Dawn. I am keeping a daughter of hers for myself to keep their lineage alive at my house.

With breeding dogs Please put in your contract that you are willing to take pups back even if they are 5 years old so they don't end up with the rest of the overpopulation of dogs in the pound. :/
That is one of the worst things about breeding is where they end up. :/

Easy, I agree with you on irresponsible people. I have 6 dogs and 3 are spayed, getting the other female spayed when she is a year. I prefer letting them grow a year before spay/neuter, just a personal thing. I have 5 female cats, all we're strays or the daughters of strays and I have spayed them all. I also trap feral cats and spay/neuter them. Got 3 tomcats fixed so far. People love to dump their dogs and cats in my area, those that don't get killed turn viscous. I have grabbed 3 puppies off the street and found homes for them out of my own pocket. If people were responsible, these poor animals woul not pay the price. But, not everyone is an unfeeling jerk. I could bring people to tears with some of my rescue stories, not all had happy endings. But most did and so I do what I can.

Before you blast me for breeding Siberians while having tons of dogs dumped here, wait, please. I believe there is a place for quality pure breds and mutts. As long as over breeding does not occur. I plan on making a sales contract that any puppy I sell will come back to me if for ANY reason the buyer can't keep the dog. This is to try and ensure a good life for my pups. Also, breeding my dogs will help me improve their quality of life by allowing me to invest in things I couldn't do on my own. I am disabled, I have rods holding my spine together. No job = no money, except what I can eek out at home. Since I am home all day, I am with my animals and keep a close eye on everyone. Knowing immunology, basic genetics, and having a vet sister means I can provide a good life and give first aide in case of emergency. I won't make a lot of money breeding my dogs, and i know that. it's just a way to bring a little in so I can buy them a stock tank for cooling off in summer, building their pen better, etc. I could also use some of the money when I rescue a pup from the streets. Plus, bottom line is I love the breed, and would like to ensure that good quality, Siberians continue to be born, not these mixed mutts that people insist are pure bred. Maybe educating the people in my area will reduce the backyard breeders demand for substandard Siberians.

Poor Utah lost one of her whites, remember? I hope you manage to get some. There are Africans here, but I´ve never seen one in the flesh, so they´re rare. i´ve never even seen a photo of a white African here. Chinese are very popular here, but then people are frightened of them.

Have fun with your huskies. I used to be in the obedience, and in the Show Dog World, but got a bit put off by some breeds not being bred to do what they were supposed to do..you know, looks, not their ability. I was into Dobermanns, and so many of them were and are too skinny, too timid, etc. I liked the smart, strong ones that could guard with intelligence. My sister still has a Dobermann, but it´s so far from what it should be.
Anyway, have fun.

Still wobbly, but I ordered the nutri drench and am waiting for it to arrive. I had it express shipped, so let's just hope the post man don't get the address wrong this time. He does it a lot, and normally not a big deal as we hand deliver each others mail here (he gets 2 streets confused). Margret is really nice and understanding when she gets my mail and I get hers. She calls me right away to come get it as she is in a wheel chair. Now if he sends it somewhere else, which has happened rarely, I'll have to wait while it goes back through the system. Ugh

No blasting coming from me on you breeding Siberians. You unlike most have the idea of breeding for quality and improving the breed.

My comment about backyard breeders pertains to those who over breed, abuse, overpopulate, starve, neglect and board dogs for sale purposes.

:)
