Are these all going to be Roos? I think I might run down and buy 2 sexed Pullets.

I took these chicks from a lady's who hatched them for her preschool. We are new, so these are our first chicks. She said they hatched on March 25/26th, and I think they are a Cochin Mix. She had no idea. 1 has 3 rows of feathers and tail feathers. The other 3 have 2 small rows of wings, and no tail feathers. I can't keep roo's so I'm thinking of running down and getting 2 pullets. I just have been reading that the Roos are very late in feathering. Making me worried, because I love these little chicks, and I will hate to have to rehome 3. Any thoughts. Could they just be different crosses and thats why the one is so much feathered.

Chick #1

Chick #2

Chick #3

Chick #4, way more feathers including on the feet and is the smallest has tail feathers

Feather sexing only works in a limited number of breeds - cochin crosses are not included in this group. It is far too early to determine gender on your chicks. Good luck for some pullets.

Yeah! That makes me so much happier! I was just looking at everyone's posts, and I'm like my little ones are not growing feathers except for the very small brown one, I can't believe how much smaller she is then the rest. I'm hoping to keep them all, we are almost done with our coop, and now just need to build the run. We are planning on hoping to keep all 7 that we have but at least 5 of them. So I was just getting worried, and thought if they were going to be males, I should go get some now so they call all grow up together.

Thanks so much, do you think they are all Cochin Mixes of some sort.

Feathered legs - maybe cochins. If I was more of an enabler, I would suggest that you hurry to town and buy 6 sexed pulets.

Understand that even wth sexed pullets there is a 10% or so chance of getting cockerels unless they are sex links.

I really want too, but I wonder if my hubby would kill me. I thought he was going to kill me when I brought the first 4 home, and then a week later I brought home another 6. But I did re-home 3 with the neighbor already.

If I buy some, what are good egg producers? And I think it would be fun to get colored eggs. I maybe I will get 3. I just don't want to have to re-home to many, because I think we are good with 6-8 in the coop we built, but I was thinking of making them a smaller one for the other side of the run, just more for fun. I know I can have up to I think 15 hens where I live, but I don't really want that many.
