Are these breeds "quiet?"

I'm not sure that the white crested is an actual breed, but I don't think it's a pekin. I think it's really a mutt duck that is bred just for the crest and not much attention is paid to any other feature or characteristic as I've never heard of any other breed characteristic other than being white and being crested. I dunno, I, too refuse to own and/or encourage others to buy crested for this reason.

There is a duck, I think it's the Bali, that is naturally crested and is a white bird, I think. Lethal gene plays a part, here, too.

White crested is a recognized breed and to be white crested, the ducks have to have a certain size crest. I have had female cayugas and they are just as loud as any other female duck....the male cayugas were quiet, but any male only makes the soft raspy quack

I see now that it is. Not that it should be...in my humble opinion. lol

I don't have my SOP in front of me but I wonder if it's truly to be white unlike the pekin which is supposed to be a nice creamy color? Not that it matters, just thinking about it being a 'pekin' with a crest.

based on holderread's and a ton of other books i've read, the white crested is actually it's own breed, recognized by the APA. They are smaller than pekins, usually around 4 1/2-6lbs and are generally described as less noisy than breeds like pekins... Pekins can have a crest, but that's a gene mutation in the pekin line, where as the crested, who were probably breed using pekins, is different. at least to the APA.

Thanks everybody for the input.

I am a veterinarian, and I did not know about the skull deformity causing the crest in ducks! Live and learn. I don't think I'll specifically order any crested ducklings.

Anyway, we have bitten the bullet and ordered one Cayuga female, and one Welsh Harlequin female. Might not be such a quiet pair, but we'll see. My daughter and I just couldn't go for a Muscovy. We may change our mind if the new arrivals are too clucky.

We might just have to house them in the garage at night, like we do our 3 chickens! We keep them in until they decide who's going to lay her egg first!

I'll keep you posted on our progress. The ducklings should arrive Dec. 30, a bit late for Christmas, but just right for King's Day!

Quack!

I am sure you will love your new little duckies! But don't hold the muscovies looks against it. My muscovies are by far the tamest big ducks I have, they like to come up on my deck and look into the window to see what going on. I do have white crested, cayuga, pekin, buff, sweedish, magpie, ancona, and muscovies and like I said before, the scovies are by far, more tame than the others.

We have Calls, Mandarins, Mallards and Muscovies. I don't think any of them are loud in small numbers. I love the personalities of all of them. They are so curious and friendly. Once they get to know you, they all come up to you at feeding time.
