We wanted to add some chicks this spring and I found a "too good to be true" deal on craigslist. This guy says these are all buff orpingtons, I'm just curious to see if you all agree and if you notice cockerels vs pullets. He said he had the hen upstairs in a bedroom (yes, true story) but this house was so creepy and dirty I just wanted OUT. I am keeping all of them far away from my other hens to be safe.

The one in the front has a darker color in its feathers other then buff. None of mine did as babies and none of the 30+ I have hatched this year have either. I would guess a mix. The ones in the background look more like buffs to me though.

Looking at the pictures closer, I see kinda like bars on the wings. I didn't think Buff's had bars on their wings.

Depending on the parent stock, you may see some variation in buff plumage in youngsters. This is not unusual in certain crosses where there is sometimes extra smut in the plumage (especially the wings and tail). Most times it clears out. If it doesn't you probably won't want to breed it, as you want them as clean buff as possible.

I don't claim to know a lot about the breed, but comparing them to googled pics, they seem a bit different. The orps don't have that speckly, mottled coloration on the wings like your photos. Maybe they are mixed, although I agree that the one in the back looks more like the pics. I've always wanted some buffs myself - they are so pretty! What a trip that the chicken was upstairs in the bedroom....We won't even ask why.....

La_TomboyGirl, this place was SCARY. Even if I wasn't concerned about bioterrorism, I would have STILL bleached all of our shoes after we left the house. CRAZY. I don't think I can count as high as the # of animals he had in his LIVING ROOM. Seriously. Cats, dog, doves, full grown chickens, and boxes FULL of chicks. These chicks actually appear healthy, though I have no idea how or why.

I almost wish I'd gone upstairs to see but mostly out of morbid curiosity.
