Hi, I have several birds we got from the hatchery that were supposed to be hens... but I'm questioning if they are Roosters. One is supposed to be a Buff Orpington another a Maran, and the other a Sapphire gem (don't even know what that is šŸ˜…). I'm supposed to be giving away my Roosters tonight and need to know if these are as well. Btw, the brown bird only has 2 long feathers on the tail which is strange but no other defining characteristics I can tell. I'm new to this, so please help. Thanks

The brown/black looks just like my Maran rooster so he is definitely one and I think the brown and white one is also a rooster. I think the grey is a hen but I don't have a ton of experience with that specific breed. Hope this helps😁

Also, the brown one has what are called saddle feathers which are located just behind the wings and is a characteristic only roosters have. That's why I guessed roo.

I'm seeing the same, pointy saddle feathers on the Maran and the brown chicken, but the sapphire gems looks to be a pullet.

The Sapphire Gem is definitely a pullet. Male SGs have barring. This one also has a small, pale comb. She is the gray/blue one.

The red and white one with the wonky tail feathers is definitely a male. He is not an Orpington, but some kind of hatchery hybrid.

The Marans (black with orange feathers peaking through) is also a definite cockerel.

At least you got one female from the three of them.

Both genders have saddle feathers, but they are long, pointy and much more noticeable in males.
