Are these Silkies pet, breeding, or show quality?

I think I'm going to go to the woman with the Craigslist ad and get 2 SQ Silkie chicks and 2 SQ Bantam Cochin chicks and 6 B/B/S Silkie eggs and 6 B/B/S Cochin eggs and then go from there. How does that sound?

Well, if you want really good quality silkies I would not do that. I have been told that for about every 10 chicks, you get about 1 really "nice" one. Say you get 5 silkies to hatch. More than likely half will be boys and you have about 3 female to work with. I would suggest (if you want to go the chick route) buy a lot at once. I dont have to much space so I got 24 chicks from a great breeder. The more reputable and good breeder, the more of a chance you have to get good birds from them. I would join the american silkie bantam club. They have a lot of articles and a list of all breeders state by state. You can see who is winning and buy from them. In california, there are MANY good breeders. Here in Louisiana, about 1 or 2 =/

Can anyone tell the names and/or contact info for the good breeders in Ca? I have only been able to find one.

I am looking for breeding/show quality Silkies to start my breeding progam with and I was wondering what you BYC'ers thought of this black Silkie hen and splash roo. Are they pet, breeding, or show quality?

I disagree these birds are "pet quality" condition looks to be more of an issue then type. Although the female has a "small crest" she looks to have good body type and very good wings! I see no off color in the male, he also has good body type and a good colored comb the wings look a little iffy on the male, it could be the way he's holding them, always use birds with good tight level wings. In my opinon they are solid breeder birds. Everyone has to start somewhere and I see nothing wrong with either one of those birds not to use them in a breeding program. If you want to improve your crest size, find yourself a large crested male, you should see some improvement in the next generation. Also, splash bred to black will give you 100% blue offspring.

Good luck,
Shari

I need to say one thing, you can not purchase SQ chicks. You can purchase chicks without obvious signs of defects such a duck foot or four toes. But until they are much older you won't even know if they are breeder quality. There are a ton of changes Silkies go through as they mature, what was an ugly baby could turn out to be a stunning adult and vice versa.

Agreed Robin. I never offer mine as SQ chicks..only with no defects up to that point..I have had some ugly babies turn into beauties!

Here are some more pics of the white roosters from the same woman with the black hens and splash rooster. They look good to me. What do you think? PQ, BQ, or SQ?
