Hello everyone. My daughter has recently expressed interest in raising some silkie pullets for 4-h showing. I messaged a silkie breeder and she showed me the following photos of some silkies. She said that she was 80% sure they were all pullets, but I know that silkies are hard to sex, so do some look more like cockerels? Which silkies would be best for showing purposes? Thank you!

I think I would pick them 4 1 2 3, but they are still young. I don't know about male or female though. I can never tell with Silkies.

Thank you! This was quite helpful. This may be a bit of a silly question, but since I’m so new to silkies, can you tell if any of them will have beards when they grow up?

They are too young to tell the sex or if they are show potential. I know our 4H is pretty lenient than if it were APA/ABA in regards to standard of perfection, they are looking more for how the bird is conditioned and the child’s age appropriate knowledge of poultry care and the breed they choose.
It’s hard to tell about beard because they are in that awkward juvenile stage where the beard might grow in.

Update: she showed me some pictures of her earlier babies from February. I don’t know anything about the silkie APA standards, but I thought that this one looked quite nice

4-H showmanship, at least for my fair, was more about how the kid presented, general knowledge, and and how well behaved and clean the bird was. It was not focused on ABA standards, but it is good to know the standard for your breed. I would talk to your 4-H leader/coordinator.
