I got these in a rare breed assortment from Cackle.

Are they Sumatras? They are so cute. Look like little crows. I just love these little rascals.

Oh crap...please don't say ''fliers''. There is no way I could cover my outside run. I could put netting but it would never make it through our ice and snow in the winter.

The coop and yard are on a slope. No way to put a roof.

Darnit I have loved the Sumatras like forever but never considered I would get them in this assortment.

''Fliers'' you say

Ohhhh, don't give up that easy lol, we need more fanciers! But you should know the facts too.

Sumatras like up high and in Malaysia they would actually fly from island to island. Given an option they like beams and high branches.

That said, the farthest I've seen one of mine fly is across the yard and over the house, only to turn around and come back to the porch lol. That was only because a dog tried to grab him! (the before not return)

They really don't go far from their roost and are not escape artists like my cochins, they do ok in a run but they are superlative bug eating free rangers too. So don't be surprised if they roost on top of your fence lol!

My Mastiffs are fenced not 10 ft. away and any bird that flies in there is history.

Mystic Farms I'll tell you a story. Over 25 yrs. ago I was at a farm and saw the most beautiful roo I've ever seen. He was all black with the most beautiful green sheen.I asked the owner what he was and he told me black Sumatra.

To make the long story short ,not long after I got three different batches of chicks from McMurray. The little Sumatra chick drowned.

I always hoped to live somewhere that I could get more Sumatra's. I did not know about their flying deal but learn things on BYC about them.

I don't live in the right place to have Sumatra's. I never considered I would get them in the rare breed special.

Gosh this makes my heart twist up inside.

I'm sorry, I did not mean to hurt you or make you feel bad, well, you could clip wings or just put some wire or, as you suggested, netting over the top

They are beautiful birds and wonderful to watch, as a breed they are not cuddly like a silkie or cochin but we had a cockerel my daughter used to put a leash and walk him lol! He would hop on her looking for his walk and then she would sit in the grass and pet him for hours.

I know what you mean about the sheen, my very first chicken was a Sumatra roo, I love those flashes of green and purple! I am an AJP (accredited jewelry professional) with GIA, and he reminded me of Mystic topaz stones, so I named him Mystic, hence the farm name!

Mystic Farms you didn't hurt my feelings. Thanks though.

You just brought me to reality. I was surprised to get emotional about my little Sumatra's.

I've just never been able to get that magnificent roo out of my mind. I happen to be very passionate about the breed because of that roo so long ago. They are a breed I hope never goes away.

Yes the black with the beautiful sheen of black and the purple.

The stance is so different and makes them stand out too.

Mystic. That's a beautiful farm name and Sumatra roo name.

I bet you love your job. I have a fascination with stones. My family said I was a ''rock hound'' when I was young.
