Are they ready to lay?

My roo and hens are about 5-6 months old. The roo is an EE, the hens are EE, RIR, BR, and silver laced Wyandotte. The roo has started showing some interest in one of the RIRs, and this past weekend he has started crowing (a lot).:hmm
5-6 months is the average time for pullets getting ready to lay an egg and becoming a hen. I'd say any day you might find an egg in one of your nesting boxes! :D

JaeG has given you good information about behaviors/combs etc. to indicate they are reaching point of lay.

Also different breeds may start later or earlier. Even pullets of the same breed can vary quite a bit .

Chicken Lover Gia, you must have made a typo when you said " my other hens didn't start laying until around 6 weeks of age."

There is NO Chicken on earth that started laying eggs at 6 weeks of age. Please proof read your posts before submitting.
