Are they shrink-wrapped? ~Pics~

You can take a warm, damp wash cloth and wrap the egg 1 at a time until the membrane is soft and start to peel it off. At day 24, they are really in trouble because they have about used up their yolk and are pooping in their egg. You will also have bleeders as you pull the shell back. It is going to be a lot of work and maybe you can save them but I think everybody who hatches have gone through this in the beginning to learn not to open during a hatch. Good luck!

They aren't in the turner... and I did up the humidity to 65% on day 18. I thought they'd be fine standing in the dividers due to other people hatching in egg cartons. I would calibrate the hygrometer but it's attatched to the incubator!

It's a King Suro 20, sorry I should have mentioned it before, so the hygrometer is inside the incubator.

Thank you so much! I'll do this

Oh and we only opened it to remove the other chicks, there was just too many in such a small space I couldnt even see most of the eggs!

Yes, I hatch in egg carton and have NO problems. This last hatch I did have humidy issues even with calibrated hygromiters and NOT opening the Bator. I believe it is due to this crazy New England weather for me.

I did have to help. If you see them breathing then it is not too late.

Do the warm wet cloth thing and start peeling. if they are alive and have been in for this long there should be no bleeding. If they are alive and you encounter bleeding you should stop peeling.

Just know that they may be week from sitting so long and you may end up having to cull.

I believe that you may have done nothing wrong. The weather has been all over the place in the last couple of months. JMHO. I hope it helps.

Crazy as it is #3 just hatched on their own!!

I'm so happy!! I'll give it some time to dry off in there and then try to help the others.

I use a spray bottle with a fine mist and spritz them to wet the shrink wrap so they can hatch. If it's been too long you may need to carefully peel them out, watch for too much blood, that means they aren't ready.

Well the other two died while I was peeling them out.

The one that hatched is doing well though.

10/24 isn't too bad for all the issues we had with this batch

Thanks to everyone for all your help!

I'm glad things are looking up.

What causes shrink wrapping? To my understanding, this occurs when the membrane becomes tighter? How is this caused, and how does it affect the chick?

Shrink-wrapping is due to loss of humidity, which causes the membrane to dry out. As it dries out, it becomes more tough, too tough for the chick to kick through it.

Whenever I am dealing with dried membrane, I have a cup of hot water and some Q-Tips handy to dampen it.

Think "toilet paper" - it tears much more easily when it's wet. Well, it's one, if imperfect, parallel..... and there aren't any perforations built into that membrane inside the egg!
