Are We All Hoarders???????

We were watching that last night too....at the same time I was coordinating for a group order to get 5 Russian Orloff pullets! These will be added to 9 Delawares, 3 Buff Brahamas, 11 Thrianta rabbits, 2 Rex rabbits, and a large hairy mutt.

BF is getting jealous because all of the animals so far are mine. He wants a peacock, some turkeys, a cat and a pug.

But yes, I agree with others that hoarding is not actually hoarding until it becomes a psychological issue that affects both your and your animals qualities of life.

So far, were all doing good! (And that may well mostly be because the dog is the only inside animal!)

ummm... well, I guess that depends on your definition!

50 some chickens
+a quad on the way
+some chicks on the way
+a full incubator

3 dogs
7 (!!!) cats (a stray we took in had kittens... and we found 3 kittens, usually it's only 2)
5 frogs
4 peacocks
6 horses

They are all well cared for and happy.

I do not consider myself a hoarder. I consider myself a hobby farmer.

Did you see the "allanimals" that came out most recently? Gross how some peopl live... how do they not know something isn't right with that?

They "collect" new animals? Pfff, amateurs. We breed more, on purpose!

We actually own machinery to make more chickens. Incubators ought to be called enablers. It's like a box that makes heroin. Except junkies don't go "Awwwwww!" and get their friends and family to come look at all the new heroin the magic box made.

I wish I was addicted to drugs. It'd be so much cheaper than chickens.

You are not a hoarder until it affects your life?

Check.

I guess the difference is, when we hit "rock bottom" we can eat our way out of the problem, with little or no rehab. "Uh oh, I have ten too many chickens. Well, it looks like freezer camp is accepting applications for the upcoming season.

I have one word for you Tala...

Denial.

I have too many chickens and I can admit that. However, I still need a few more to have "way too many" so I am still coping with my addiction.

See? I'm fine. I can always say I just don't have the complete chicken set, yet. There's still a few I don't have.

Originally my wife told me I could have 15.

I have 51 now. Perhaps I'm dyslexic.

I'll be selling a goodly number in September.

Ok most of you have me beat. And yes I do agree that hording and loving to have many animals are two different things. My animals are pampered. Very well taken care of. They are not just animals they are family. The more I am around people the more I like my animals.

I'm starting to FEEL like a hoarder.......more chickens than I know what to do with. I have been trying to downsize without much luck lately....of course, I have bought a few more along the way. But I have now finally listed out who I want to keep and the rest will be going to a sale this weekend and the 21st.

But yes, I don't consider myself a hoarder.....just someone who has a few too many animals! But they are taken care of.....I would just like less work on a daily basis so I could enjoy them more.

I love watching those shows.....its always makes me want to cleaaaaan.

I'm to the point that I know it's a problem. Actually it passed being a problem a few months ago. But with 7 cabinets and plenty of eggs someone let things get out of control.

I'm planning on selling down. It's just so hot out and people just aren't looking for chickens right now. May take some to the flea market this weekend anyway. Am definately going to move most of them this fall.

I think with chickens it's the variety that gets you. There are so many beautiful kinds of chickens, it's hard to stop at just one kind. The real bad deal with chickens, is they lay an egg almost every day when they feel like it, and you can incubate a lot of baby chicks if you are good at it. They start out in the brooder, then they grow up to the bigger cage, then outside brooder, bigger outside cage, then before you know it, they are just chickens and you are trying to decide if you keep, sell, or eat them. And they start laying eggs.... My best deal is culling hard and often. Just keeping the best of the very best is good for the bottom line, less work than keeping a lot of ones that really shouldn't be in the breeding pen. Sell early, sell often. Give away eggs if you must. Unplug the incubator, sell some more birds. Put the incubator in the attic. Sell some chicks. Okay, go up to the attic and put the incubator inside Grandma's trunk. Lock it. Flush the key down a toilet. Harvest your extra roos. Rinse, lather, repeat.
