Are worms culprit? You had same problem?

Oh well, my Lavender Orph died in her sleep last night. I have a healthy Lavender Orph rooster but I just can't keep the hens from dying.

I bought her from someone who said she was laying. She laid 2 small eggs right away and then no more eggs. I thought it was from the stress from her being new to the flock. I have had her for 2 months now and 3 days ago, I noticed diarrhea. I treated her for worms, at closer look my flock had mites and she did too. Treating the flock for lice and cleaning everything, (I always keep ACV in our water, except if it goes up over 100 dg) I isolated her because of the treatment of her diarrhea and what I believed to be worms.

She went down hill fast and stopped eating except a mealworm or cricket I gave her.
After 3 days in isolation, and treatment with Duyrimicin and ivomectin, yogurt and herbs, medicated food, 2 baths, alot of pampering, she died in her sleep last night.

She didn't have any other symptoms. No stressed breathing and no paralization. I suppose her organs shut down. I can only guess it was worms. It could have been a number of things. I do not have anyone around to do an autopsy on her, I will open her up myself and check for worms or abnormalities that I can see.----

Well, I opened it up and unless you have to have a microscope to see them, I didn't see any worms. She may have passed them,
but there was no sign. So what then? No egg laying in 2 months when I know she laid a couple small eggs. Diarrhea, her comb was pale. Eventually no appeitite. She did have mites, did I kill them too late?

No others have diarrhea, although couple have pasty butt feathers. I keep the water clean always with ACV in it. I do have well water, I'm cleaning everything again today with bleach. And changing bedding. I wish it wasn't my Lavender Orph hen though.
I really loved her. And, I want a LO hen, to go with my Roo.

Tell me about your worm experiences or any other illness' that seem to be like mine. Tell me about your L O. as well. How delicate is your from illness'? Could that be why their on rare list?

Thanks, for listening!

It sounds more like a problem with egg laying EYP, maybe? I don't know much about the disease but, there are many good threads on here to get information. I'm not sure it's a good idea to deworm and have them on antibiotics plus herbs at the same time...seems like a lot of medication to me. What kind of herbs were you giving her and why?

I'm just trying to get more information for others to use.

The only way that you would know for sure what happened to your hen would have been to have a professional necropsy performed.

Ivomec is great for round worms, lung worms and lice. I'm not sure that it's as broad spectrum as you need though, so you may want to try fenbendazole (Safeguard) next time. It will get most everything but tapeworm. I've use it twice a year because if chickens are outside on the ground, they are going to get worms. They get lethargic, skinny and lay around a lot when they have worms. I had one go through a very bad molt before I realized she just needed to be wormed.

Another thing that comes to mind is coccidiosis, because you mentioned diarrhea. Coccidiosis is microscopic so you won't see it, but it damages the intestinal lining and is the biggest killer of chicks. Older chickens can get it too, though not as common. Sometimes you'll see blood in the poop, but not always. Even though you're using medicated feed, which is preventative, the dosage is very low and wouldn't "cure" them if they were infected already. You can use Corid to treat that.

I agree with leadwolf, I think I'd lay off the herbs and antibiotics because you don't know how that's reacting with the other medications. I would treat the most common, obvious things first. That being coccidiosis and worms.

Thank you for your information! I was not giving the herbs and medication at the same time, but thanks for letting me know not to do that. I probably would have. Well she was pretty bad off each day got worse. She died in her sleep after a week of fighting it off. So sorry.

I really would love to have a hen to go with my roo, but after losing 5 to illness, I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I haven't lost any other breed. I have 18 other breeds, and one LO which is a roo. But I can't seem to raise any LO hens! Are they more susceptible to illness than other breeds?

Should I also treat water with small dose of Corid or Sulmet for just the LO chicks? I don't want them to get immune to it though. But since I have had a history of losing them. I'm just alittle gunshy now of raising LO but I want some so bad.

Don't worry about them getting immune to the Corid, the Corid kills the parasites in the intestines. So go ahead and dose the whole flock. Put a waterer out for them with one teaspoon of 9.6% Corid (amprolium) per gallon and take away all the other water sources. Change it out daily with a clean dose and do it for 5 days.
