Are Wyandottes more of a "grumpy" breed?

We have 7 wyandottes and they are really sweet birds. They are laid back but don't take any nonsense from the younger roos. They are lap chickens thanks to my 4 year old granddaughter who loves to play with the "tsickies" and handled them a lot as chicks.

My two GLW are more aloof than my others (BO, BA, RIR). They do come running for treats. Only one is laying so far (23 weeks old) and she is very stubborn on not laying in the nest boxes. I've finally gotten her to lay in a box filled with pine shavings on the floor which is at least conveniently located for me (and clean) and not in the farthest, hardest to reach corner in the deep litter. But I still have stuff all over the coop floor to keep he from nesting in the litter. I'm gonna keep it all down for the next week-I'm hoping after laying in her new bos for 1 1/2 weeks she'll stay there. Its been quite a struggle to change her ways on this.

From what I've gathered, Wyandotte tempermant varies quite widely. I've heard the "sweetest birds ever" and "little laced demons" stories. Given the mix of birds you described, I would not be surprised if the Wyandottes are less people-friendly than the others you have.

My SLW rooster is one of the nicest chickens in the flock.

I have 5, 5week old GLW and 6, 5 week old SLW and 5, 5 week old dominiques. My dominiques are the friendliest, smartest chickens I have ever seen! I must say though that the Wyandottes, though not as friendly as the doms still will run up to me and beg for treats and pets.

I really enjoy all of my chicks. But....Doms are my personal favorite.

I have 2 SLW and one sits on my lap and the other doesnt. The one that sits on my lap is a tad bossy with the other girls but would go unnoticed if you were not paying close attention. I have one RIR that sits on me and the other doesnt...matter a fact there is an EE that doesnt like to be pet. I think each one just have their own personality. One thing for sure is that most people that stop by are most taken by the SLW's.

I had a GLW a few years back before we decided to switch our operation to bantams. He was the goofiest rooster I ever had and oh soo sweet. He loved getting up on my shoulder and he would run for treats. If you called his name while he was close to you he would do the "whatever" head roll . It broke my heart the day he left here and I still miss him everyday so much so that I picked up a 6 week old bantam glw cockerel in hopes he will turn out just like nelson

I've got two silver laced and a columbian.... The columbian is not much of a people person...er..chicken, but the silver laceds are among the more friendly of the flock.

I have 6 GLW and they are not people chickens. I thought maybe because I didn't get them at a few days old but at 4 weeks old that had something to do with it. But reading the other posts. I'm not so sure. They will let me touch there tail feathers but that is all. When I sit on the ground at the coop they will walk by and look at me. I was thinking if I'm not careful I may get pecked.
