Are you adding to your flock this spring?

I have so fallen in love with Blue Australorps. I told DH that I want to get three Blue pullets as chicks if one of my girls (Black Australorps) goes broody. That would put me up to 6 females to 1 male, and still fit in the space I have, with a little to spare. I was thinking I wanted to hatch a couple eggs to see what BO over BA would give me, but that might wait another year.

I know ordering pullets isn't a guarantee, but the odds are better. And I want Blue... oh, they are sooooo pretty!

I'm adding DUCKS this year!!!! But I usually add 2 or 3 each year. I like to keep a small flock because I find it's easier to keep track of individual birds' health. I keep mine for eggs, so I don't grow any for the table.

I only add a few so that I will always have eggs, even after my older girls retire. I don't plan on having more than 20 total, even though I have room for more.

ETA: But I also love having a mixed flock! I have a Cochin, a Buff Orp, a Barred Rock, a Welsummer, a Buff Brahma, a red sexlink, a black Silkie, a splash Silkie, and a silver Sebright rooster. I want to add a Polish, an EE, and a Sussex this year, but with the ducks coming, I may wait until next spring.

My ducks are going to be mixed, too: a Runner, a Swedish, a Welsh Harlequin, and a Saxony.

Love my yard candy!!!
