This is one of the reasons I use a fountain pen or a felt tip style. No smudges.

Is smudging much of an issue with modern pens? I just scribbled and rubbed my finger across and didn't see any.

Even as a righty I smudge ink. It really ticks me off. I have no patience for crappy gooey pens.

I used to use ballpoint a lot which smudges a lot

And sometimes the paper. Printer paper and notebook paper (think slick and shiny) are the worst. And forget underlining in the bible, that's a messy mistake
I looooove using natural paper. The stuff that has some texture and softness to it is impossible to smudge on. Elephant poop paper has been the best so far.
