We are allowed to have poultry and live stock except swine. There is no limit on the number of chickens. I really do not see how anyone could keep chickens without their immediate neighbors knowing, unless there are breeds that are just naturally quite. My girls are so proud of their egg laying that their egg songs are actually louder than my little cockerel's crow. My neighbor always tells me how she enjoys hearing them announce their egg laying prowess. I can also hear the various neighbor's flocks. I love the sounds and so far the neighbors do as well.

I opened this thread merely because of the title. I thought, "what in the world are they preaching about sin?" I was extremely surprised to see what it's about. And it is a dang sin to stop people from having their beloved feathered friends! I'm fairly new here and it amazes me that there are places that wont let you have chickens, ducks, etc. I've been in the country for almost all of my life. Except a six month stent in a college town in Michigan. Though I wasn't interested in chickens then. I'm very blessed to live in a small town in rural Alabama. The closest we have to anything industrialized here is the large chicken houses that raise chicks for Pilgrim's Pride and Tyson. Of course this breaks my heart, but at least I don't have to raise the chicks myself to send off for food.

The title is because every HOA or town I call to see if I can keep my girls there treats me like I am doing something wrong. They all talk like how could any sane person ever want chickens. I love my fluffy butts, I just wish I could convince others of what great pets they make.

My coop is insulated so it is hard to here there bird song, except when Zoe is having a hard time and then she walks the whole yard to make sure every knows of her distress.

This is an awful injustice to chicken lovers over! My uncle from Columbus, Ohio was here this past weekend and said that they aren't allowed to have any either. Some obviously don't see the potential in learning for children and providing food for ourselves when they prevent people from having chickens or other farm animals. Someone once told me that generations from now, the kids will have no idea where apples really come from. They would just know they come from the store. I see this the same way with eggs. I will include chicken meat here also for those that do choose to raise stock to eat. Though I wont eat mine, they're my feathered kids.

I just moved, but at my old house we had 4 chickens secretly. Our HOA covenants didn't mention chickens and our city ordinances said we could have 10, no roosters. We even met with 2 different laywers to review our covenants to make sure we were legal. Both said we were, but when our HOA found out, they told us we couldn't have them. Meanwhile the HOA did nothing about the 5 large barking dogs in the neighborhood, but my quiet girls were a problem. I even had Animal control come out and inspect me. They found no smell, no noise. They wrote a wonderful report for me, but that wouldn't hold any weight with our HOA. We ended up moving.
We had the same situation. We also moved because of it.

To have what we want it would cost way too much, either we have to sacrifice on house, price, or location. I don't want to send my DH to the poor house, but he works so hard and I don't think it is right to deprive him the house he deserves. I want him to come home to his castle and not feel depressed because it is not as nice as his co workers who make less and families. The reason we moved was because I wanted to give him a nicer home. Granted we would have the home of our dreams if our friends were a little more helpful...like at all. They already remind him every day about the one friend he lost, I am hoping to entertain and bring in new friends who don't look at him as if he owes them something.....Sorry a bit of pent up frustration.

Yes, there is an underground chicken culture hiding from our HOA. I am setting up my coop this weekend, have chicks on order, and will hide them like everyone else does in the neighborhood. I live in the country, on over half an acre. Horses are allowed, but no livestock of any sort. Ironic that because we live in an area designated by the state of CA as a "Tier One" fire zone, and the HOA recently let 600 goats graze on common areas to help control the overgrowth, but they will not allow individual homeowners to have them. Even more ironic is that we are in San Diego county, and the city of SD just last year passed an ordinance to allow city dwellers to have both backyard hens AND milk goats. So if you live in the city it's ok, but not in our rural farm neighborhood. I find the acceptance of horses and noisy dogs infuriating, since laying hens are not as smelly as horses or as noisy as dogs. I've had backyard chickens off and on throughout my life and finally decided I will now, again. I'm spearheading a petition to change the CC&Rs in our neighborhood, and have had great response so far. I came to this thread hoping to learn more from others faced with this issue, and will likewise offer help as I make my way thru the process. I'm not giving up, because it's a dumb rule and needs to be changed... -Susan

I've honestly never bothered looking it up cause everyone around here has chickens, cows, goats, ducks, turkeys, horses, donkeys, sheep and so on. Plus we are on almost an acre and have my father and sister in law in the front and on the side of me. The only one I would have a issue with is the guy behind me but he won't say anything cause I have a lot of dirt on him and he has a lot more to loose than I do.

I would assume we are zoned for it but I have no idea if there is any limits or anything. We only have 1 roo so far but there is a Bo roo 2 houses down and if he hasn't bothered anyone I'm sure a lil silkie roo will be fine

I came across 5 acre lots that allowed 2 horses and 2 cats or dogs but nothing else. How is my neighbor even going to know I have them let alone be bothered by them???? It is crazy what you can find, we did look at 1.5 acre lots that you could not do anything to the lot or have anything other then cats and dogs and only 2. What is the point of having land if you can't do anything on it????
