We live in a little town near Sidney Ia, and have had to settle for quail because of our towns crummy rules =(. So frusrating. We own ther entire block, we are only a gravel road away from being zoned for it, and we have no neighbors within 300 feet! Common!

are you neighbors against having chickens? to be honest if you can have quail i think you should be able to have chickens. i use to live in az and i know those things would get on my nerves with their mating call. i would rather listen to a rooster than a quail.

If I lived in a place chickens were illegal....... let's not go there
I'd just be an outlaw. Any time some fool (or group of fools) passes some stupid law or regulation declaring something they don't like to be illegal, those who DO like whatever it is will continue. I don't like tomatoes. Never have, even though my dad is known for the ones he grows every year. I don't have the right to tell anyone they cannot eat tomatoes just because I don't like them. If everyone who wanted chickens in these communist towns would just go ahead and get a few and stand their ground against those opposing them, it would do EVERYONE some good.

I don't think the problems is that people don't like them. I think one huge part of the problems is that most people can not see them as pets, they are unthinking disgusting barnyard animals that are white with red beaks who make a lot of noise and smell. I have people I know who said well if you are having a hard time finding a house because of them then give them away. These people are unable to see them as they see a cat or dog and can not see how they are on the same intellectual level as a cat or dog. Also people I know who know that I am spending a bit of money to put together my girls new home and are trying to push me in to giving them away. People who I know have spent more on making a room for there cats.

Another problem we face is that they are also seen as a fad, not a lifestyle.

Can't legally have em here in small town California but there's a lot around. Some people are pretty bold about it roosters & such. Sorry but I wouldn't want to live next to a rooster anymore than I would some yapping dog. Hens are pretty quiet..definately so at night. For a while somebody was even letting a couple of RIR run around the neighborhood. You'd drive around a corner & there would be a chicken in the middle of the road, seemed like asking for trouble to me. We're pretty low key about it, had to put a net over their pen cause they are able to clear the fence. No eggs yet so no telling what their egg songs will like....only a whisper I hope. If we get caught we'd probably rehome the chickens then try to change the laws. Pretty sure it would be a very hard sell which is why we went this route.

Actually after what I have read about San Diego I think you might have some support for your cause. You might look in to why San Diego decided to allow them, that would help. Other then that the only advice I can give is to consider making a coop that is insulated, and look at homedepots site for sound block. Also plants help dampen noise. Good Luck

Yeah, there's some larger cities that now allow them but this is such a small town I'm sure the attitude would be....Hey, you want chickens no problem, just move out of city limits. I'm not about to sell my almost paid off house to buy a house a few miles away & end up with a big mortgage. The people that already have chickens & are getting away with it don't want to draw attention to themselves. That's why I won't try changing laws till I get caught. The others don't want to bother or don't want chickens allowed. People here prefer pitbulls & gamecocks to pullets. Thanks for the hints on sound suppression.

I understand, just remember the denser the foliage the better, evergreen if you can. I was looking in to some blue holly but I can put it somewhere my girls can't get to it.
