As we are looking around at all our poultry - the chickens, the geese, the ducks and the turkeys, I often ask myself am I managing our flocks or are they managing us. So, I thought I'd pose this topic and see what you have to say about it.

I manage them. I have so many other things going on--wife, mom, nurse, church, garden, horses, buying a new house, byc

, I HAVE to keep my birds simple. Feed and gather eggs once a day, water once a week, toss some greens over the run when I walk past them, rake the shavings in the coop around once a month or so. That's pretty much the extent of my management.

We've scaled back on the number of chickens we have and no longer have livestock. We have fewer pets and a smaller garden now, too. It's a pretty good balance at the moment.

I am required to go to the front door when they come peck on it in the morning, to dispense treats. What can I say?

I do spend a lot of time out with them, especially my new group of 9 week olds because I have gotten several of them tame enough to hold. They are just so endlessly entertaining for me to watch, listen as they chatter with me, and cuddle with the ones that like it. It has become a real benefit to my mental health :) My husband comments about how much of my day they take up, and it's a little hard to explain that I wouldn't have it any other way.
