Are you Prepared?

You CAN eat dog, cat, pony and especially pot bellied pig. Your neighbors might get mad if you eat Fido, but never count out dog as a potential meal in a crisis.

we have a whole house generator that runs off our 500 gal propane tank.. we have a well for water and wood stove for heating and cooking. the pantry is always stocked.. we would last about 4 weeks.. after that who knows...

You could, in theory, run the generator only an hour a day, 30 minutes a time to cool off your freezers and pump some water. This way you would only use 2 to 5 gallons of fuel a day depending on the size of your genset. I'm a generator tech and have one on my house too, although I need to upsize my propane tanks.

Purple - Where can I get a diesel generator? Don't they make them in smaller units or or they only in large units? I'd love to get a diesel one but I'm having problems finding them.

Small diesel engines are too expensive so there isn't much of a market for them. Northern and others do sell small diesels but they are thousands of $$$.

Miller and a few other companies make diesel combination welder/generators. They are reliable as all heck and are job site proven. You see them on the back of welding trucks all the time. You may want to look locally for a used one.

That is partially true. Thousands of people own generators ranging from little gasoline units up to large propane and diesel models. I do agree to wait and assess the situation before cranking up a genset. In the event of an emergency many people will automatically start up their units, probably excited they have the opportunity to use them. It's a few weeks into the crisis where foodstuffs start running out that advertising you have power may be a mistake.
