That show cracks me up! But I also fine it a little informative. I am inadvertently a little prepared as I buy organic grains in bulk because is saves money and I plan on making my own feed. Nothing is better than bread made with fresh ground flour. I have skills!
 
Bakerjw, if it gets bad here it will still be burgers on the grill/campfire, but they will be deer or rabbit or squirrel burgers.

I like that show - but the couple that practices sneaking around in their house in the dark with guns, tapping in Morse code on the walls and speaking to each other in an obscure, mostly unrecognizable language was too much!

I like that show too but what I found interesting about that couple was how they prepared to "eat well" during a social collapse. They are overweight, and they intend on eating heart stopping foods into the social destruction Apocalypse or what ever they're prepping for. I forgot since the show shows different people preparing for different things.

What I want to know is... they may be able to "eat well" but where will they get their diabetes meds in a social collapse?

It doesn't take a lot of money to get prepared. It might seem overwhelming at first but once you learn what is important and how to go about doing it then it becomes quite easy.

For instance. A 5 gallon bucket with lid from Lowes is $4.00 to $5.00. Six gallon Mylar bags are cheap when you buy 50 at a time. Oxygen absorber packs (they are a must) are also very cheap in bulk. Twenty five pounds of rice at Sams club is $12.00 or so. Macaroni, spaghetti, other pasta, pinto beans, oatmeal, cornmeal, sauce mixes, etc... are readily available at the local grocery store.

I put most dried foods in ziploc bags and poke holes in them with a toothpick.

Put the Mylar bag in the 5 gallon bucket. Put rice in the bottom. Put Spaghetti in the middle. Put bags of other food stuffs around the spaghetti. Add rice as packing material into the voids. Continue until full and use rice to even things out. Add oxygen absorber packs as directed (different sizes for different volumes). I use a long flexible plastic to suck a lot of the air out of the bag prior to sealing. Fold the Mylar bag over and iron shut with an iron on the highest setting. In a couple of days the oxygen absorber will take out the rest of the oxygen leaving the dried goods in an environment free from oxygen. You will now have 20 to 30 pounds of dried goods in a durable container with a shelf life of decades. Used sparingly this will last a family of 4 at least a week.

Remember. If it gets bad it won't be burgers on the grill anymore. It will be boring foods but boring foods are much preferred to hunger.

I use a food saver to re-bag food like rice,beans,tobacco,sugar,oatmeal,flour,meal,coffee and many more I can't think of. It takes the air out, and I put them in 55gallon barrel with a sealed lid, and keep it in a spare bedroom, along with 5 five gallon water jugs, 5 five gallon jugs of kerosene for heating in a emergency. I have coleman lanterns and stoves which are great for cooking and lights when the power goes off.
 
Oh I wish I still had cable TV & that doomsday preppers was on Aussie TV. My hubby would LOVE it!

My hubby has been preparing for an invasion by the Germans for years (well as a joke that is what he says!!!). 'Zeee Germans are cominggggg'

His list of essentials includes:

- Guns. As many as he can fit, hide, stash & obtain. Guns of all descriptions. He has enough for a mini army

We always say that if war broke out we'd take a stand in our home! (sheesh... we sounds like rednecks!)
- Rope. Never know what you might need rope for.
- A knife.
- Ammo
- Rum and Wine

I have noticed that his list of essentials is not as comprehensive as some. I mean... what am I meant to eat! Germans?

P.S - No offence to any Germans out there :)
