Now, Washington does seem to be an appropriate place to pile the broody poop, for MANY reasons, but probably not for gas prices.

Our nation is dependent on foreign oil and we import about 70-75% of our oil from foreign sources. It is not the oil companies, nor Washington DC that sets the price of oil (and as a result, gas). It is these foreign nations that control the price of oil.

The US consumes more oil and gas per capita than any other developed nation.

If our nation as a whole were less dependent upon gas and oil to run everything under the sun, then we would be importing less oil and gas and less dependent upon foreign powers. It is a simple matter of supply and demand. IF WE didn't demand so much oil and gas, then the prices would go down.

As you can see by Bantymum’s post, she is worse off than we are in this department. I sure hope you don’t drive a gas guzzler like I do. I feel the pain every time I fill up.

Living on the gulf coast of Texas, I am acutely aware of the number of refineries and oil producing wells (& drilling platforms) that have the potential of being wiped out in a single weekend from the threat of hurricanes. When Rita came in a couple of years back, there was serious concern about our refineries and wells here. It is only by the grace of God that most of the US's refining capacity and oil production was not wiped out. We are still recovering from that.

No one likes the idea of using nuclear power to provide the lion's share of our electricity needs, nor do they like to play the higher prices for wind generated electricity, so we import less expensive oil and gas to run our electric plants and factories so we can maintain a lifestyle of STUFF and keep cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Until our nation as a whole is willing to make broad sweeping changes in the way WE live our lives, then nothing will change. And frankly, I am not willing (yet) to give up my suburban.

Ducking the flying rotten eggs......
