are your dogs and chicken friends

Hank and Sally hanging out. He seems to enjoy the company!

I know some may not agree with this but it worked well on my Catahoula who was bred for baying hogs. I have a trainging collar that can emit a click or a shock. If used properly it is very effective. Watch as many videos from real pros and you'll get the idea. Be firm with your negative response and reward even the slightest positive try. Levi my Catahoula will even let chickens eat out of his bowl after he's done. He has realized that the chickens are part of his job now. If you decided to get one make sure it has a variable shock control so you can turn the intensity up or down depending on the personality of the dog. My dog was very responsive to even the slightest shock yet my friends pit bull was very stubborn and wouldn't even pay attention to anything below the halfway mark. Feel free to PM me if you want. I'm not a pro but I'll share everything I know. Be patient and you'll do fine.

Brilliant tool in experienced hands.... Disastrous in inexperienced ones.

I don't know how to train them as I just expect it from them all my animal I bring into this house there better be no aggression that includes visiting pets its always been that way and I think my older pets teach the younger ones. the only set of pets I cant let hang out together are my pet rats and the chickens as the chickens try and eat the rats and never left to chance what the rats would try and do

How awesome would that be if they did hang out together! Pet rats and a flock of chickens peacefully free ranging. I would pay to see it!

Great thread! I'm currently working on training my klein poodle, Jedi, to accept our baby chicks. He loves to chase small animals: birds, ground squirrels, squirrels, cats... It's been really good for keeping those critters out of our garden beds...but it also means we have our work cut out for us training him that the baby chicks are part of our pack. He is very trainable though...he's a therapy dog for the elementary school I teach at, he's also done some agility and flyball training as well as a lot of trick training. The baby chicks are just hard for him because he gets soooo excited. We've been doing a lot of desensitization and training with them just in their brooder in the same room...where he can hear and smell them but can't see them. We did his first training with the chicks out exploring and him in his crate today...he was super interested and excited...so it will definitely be a while before he can be free with them. My goal is just to have him safe and preferable ignoring them at the least when they are in their coop and run and he is in the yard and I am around to supervise. I would love it if they could be out in the yard with him and he would protect them as he does my garden beds...with me inside the house. I don't think I'd ever leave him out in the yard with them free ranging the yard too. Too many things can happen...and I wouldn't want to blame him if I came home to find a dead chicken...if it was really another predator or a neighbor dog that got in. We're just taking it one step at a time and I won't be concerned if it takes 6 months to a year to get him there...but I think he'll probably be fairly chicken safe by the end of the summer...as long as I continue to work with him 5-10 times a week.

Cary I wish it were that easy. Some breeds just can NOT be trained unless they're babies around chicks. Our Minipins are bred killers, and can't be trusted. The younger one is trained to kill, and is a great mouser and rat killer. But being a terrier, would snatch a chick in a nano second.

Aaaaw cute, one of my chickens used to creep up behind my dog when he was sleeping and attack him it made him jump, she was only a bantie so it didn't hurt my dog... It was funny to watch though
