Are your geese done laying for the year?

J are your gander still fertilizing the females? Boy this has been another weird year. I believe that each different year the geese react to the way the weather is.

Miss Lydia I hope that number 8 is Missy's magic number to start going broody........

Me too RURU, this afternoon when I was giving out meal worms she came out and stayed out a couple hours but then she went back in and was laying on her eggs again, is this how they start? she would be due to lay tomorrow so will that be the test to if she is really going into broody mode? I'm use to ducks[Muscovy] being broody first time for a goose.

This is my first year with geese also. My girl Beatrice is up to #53 today. I took one egg I had in the fridge, marked it "fridge" with permanent marker and put it back on her nest with the other three eggs. I'm hoping she is broody by this time next week and I get at least TWO females out of the gaggle so she can go into retirement lol. BTW I picked up both those bird seeds that were recommended and put about a cup of each into their food bucket. They seem to like them so that's a good thing. Any way to figure out the % of calcium in each type of seed mix?

Does it not say on the bag? I won't be getting any until Sat. If Missy lays tomorrow it will be 60. That just blows my mind, 53 is a lot too and yours is still laying amazing.

Nope it says everything BUT calcium :(. I don't know if you mentioned this already or not but what breed is Missy? Beatrice and her mate Freddie are year old pilgrims that I enjoy daily!

On the Porch patio and deck it only says good source of calcium. It is the nuts that provide the calcium. Actually I put mix in what ever I feel like and my gosh do the LOVE the nuts!!!!!

Today I made sure that Sammie had some nut and berry mixture. He just loves the nuts. He has been eating but is looking depressed. I have been putting the horse wrap on his leg and he has not done any better. So today just took it off and am leaving it off. Sammie has always had a limp even from when he was a gosling. I guess his joint maybe wore out like what happens with us. I hope I rested it enough to help some. Sammie use to be head gander now is the lowest gander on the ranking.

He is a fighter when it comes to living but if this leg keeps up he is not going to make it through winter. I hate to think this! Sammie is my very first Sebastopol and momma loves him dearly! Sammie is 7 years old. Boy is he mad at us for taping his leg.

When giving the nut mixtures do not worry about how much you are giving because they will eat what they want and if too much will leave it. But I know from my brats that they eat every nut in there and when I feed either the all nut mixture or the nut and berry there is never any left!! They like it that much.

I have noticed since I include that into their feed while laying eggs and after laying eggs while sitting on the nest I have not lost any females this year due to calcium loss that usually happens and the females look great one day and are dead the next day. So I know this is working for me and I hope it works as well for all who try it in their normal feed.

RURU I have a 9yr old Muscovy drake that has serious leg problems, we thought many times over the winter we were going to have to put him down, but he has kept going, He has to stay in another part of out yard with his girls who come and go as they please but he isn't able to keep up with the other drakes and he want's to be head drake still. So he is in the old folks part of the yard. he has 3 girls who will be 9 in July. I have started adding brewers yeast to their feed and will also offer them this mix that you rec. to see if it will help him, as long as he stays away from the other drkes he does fine but if he slips into their part of the yard he will pick a fight and it sets him back sometimes a week before he can get up and walk again half way normal. Poor thing. But most of the time he has a good attitude, if I ever see him where he won't eat and is getting depressed then I'll have to let him go. Does Sammie have a girl friend to keep him company? maybe that would help.

Thankfully, I have not seen much breeding lately and as far as I can tell, only 1 goose is still laying.
