My ducks will be 15 weeks old tomorrow. The ducks are showing signs that they want to mate. The drake is now trying. With my chickens it seems that pullets start to squat when they are getting close to laying, like a week or two. Are ducks different, or do they just start mating longer before eggs?

first, you need to get the drake away from the chickens if he is trying to mate them. Drakes can kill chickens by trying to mate. Yes they will start mating like behavior sometimes before they are ready to lay. Seems the boys are always to go sooner than the girls.

Ducks are not with the chickens. Ducks are only with the geese. Sorry the way I wrote it before it looked the drake was mating with chickens. he is not. He is trying to mate with the ducks. The ducks seem interested in mating as well. I thought the females seemed young to be interested in mating. My comparison with chickens was to say that roosters may try to mate before hens are ready to lay but the hens aren't receptive or squat till they are very close to egg laying.
