ARGH! Groundhogs!

they'reHISchickens :

Going out isn't going to help... their tunnel openings are 30-50 feet apart.

About 75 feet should do it and that makes it a very expensive exclusion project.

I discovered some time ago that a bit of time with the rifle or shotgun or using live traps suitably baited will take care of the over sized ground squirrels. You can use dogs if you wish but I won't.

1 groundhog
1 tbsp salt
1 cup flour
2 tbsp fat

Clean groundhog; remove glands; cut into 6 or 7 pieces. Parboil in salted water for 1 hour. Remove from broth; roll in flour and fry in hot fat (deep fat may be used) until brown. Serves 6.

This morning I sat on my back porch and watched as the groundhog crawled into the trap, picked up the bowl of chicken feed with his mouth, and crawled throught the other side. When I went out to examine if the trap was jammed, I stepped near and and it snapped closed! How does this ginormous groundhog tip-toe his way through!!??

But on a good note, he now knows the trap is a regular source of food. I feel that eventually it will work.

In the mean time, he has excavated an enormous amount of dirt from under the edge of my coop, and I'm now worried for it's structural integrity. Truly this foul beast is has impressive digging skills. Every day I fill it in, and the next day the hole is bigger than it was before.

I have a friend who's coming over when he has time to hide and attempt to shoot the bugger, but the thing is so skiddish, it's been impossible to get a clear shot.

I've been waging war all summer. My goal now is to eliminate him before he goes back into hibernation.

Not hurting anything my foot.

They have eaten my tomatoes and other parts of the garden, the rodents.

They did not plant nor sow the seed so no fair. Tunnels can open a can of worms to other preditors.

Good luck getting rid of them. When my Dad was small they ate the things.

Gloria Jean PS line the inside of the coop floor with hardware cloth or 2x4 wire hook it to the inside walls with screws and fender washers under them. I doubt he will go up through that.
