Arizona Chickens

I lost my first chick today, one of the motley crew of silkie wanna-be's. We went to Prescott and when we returned they had somehow gotten out and we only recovered 4 of the 5. I think it was the ravens that got it. We have ravens nesting in the yard. Oh well it was bound to happen sooner or later.....

I'm so sorry Mandymooligan.

Sorry about your loss Mandymooligan! Be sure to check everywhere a chicken could squeeze into, it may be hidden someplace. Do you know how they got out?

I'm sorry to hear about your grandma. I don't think people always realize that the cost of living is higher here.

I'm also sorry to hear about your dad. I wish that healthcare wasn't so expensive. Have you tried asking churches and other organizations? When all those people voted against a universal healthcare system, they said there were lots and lots of charities that would help.

Mandymooligan - I'm sorry to hear about your chick, and you are right... it happens. It sucks, but it seems like it is part of having chickens. The little ones are especially easy to lose.

We have no clue how they got out. We are going over it with a fine toothed comb and trying to find any leaks. Thanks for everyone's condolences. Sadly I guess it is just part of chiken ownership.

I've found that the chicks are surprisingly squishy, and can squeeze through wire fairly easily. They can also jump higher than you'd expect (or jump onto an object, and then onto a higher object...) Good luck figuring out what they did to escape!

does anyone here have or have had sicilian buttercups? i have two of them at 5 weeks old, their combs are coming in already turning red and they have wattles! they are supposed to be pullets, bought from mcmurrary. i know i read that they mature early, but like this? anyone?
