Arizona Chickens

I had one that pipped later than the rest yesterday. I ended up helping it out, because
1- I am impatient and
2- I could see it had pulled all the blood in from the veins that line the inner membrane.

I would take a peek at one, and if it looks like they are shrink-wrapped, go for it---assuming you can do so without them bleeding out.

I had some slow shows there also Shelly. I still have two eggs and I am leaving them there overnight will be day 23. The ones that had pipped over 8 to 10 hours without zipping I helped as guided by other hatchers. The one I didn't help died. The others are alive and well. I didn't crack more than 1/4 inch at a time though and I did it with a none sharp item. One of them that did nothing more than poke and hole and chirp through it for 8 hours bleed and laid there when I helped it out. I left it in the bator overnight alone. This morning it is up and running around. Weather or not we are suppose to help, I hear yah and nay, I chose life if possible.

Good luck, can't wait to see your little babies.

the two zip no pippers are both dead in shell - so sad, but not unexpected. I figured they had when I saw that the membrane where they had pipped had changed color this morning to more like dried egg yolk, before it had been more greyish. Thanks for the advice so I felt like I could check them out. Next time I'll know to try to help around 10 or 12 hours later (I had some that zipped fine after 12 hours), or especially if the membrane is looking different. It wasn't shrink wrapped but a little tough where it had dried in the place the shell had came off, they never got through it. In retrospect I think they were trying to zip and got stuck or too tired. One was the one that had pipped on the lower half of the egg. Nothing beats experience for knowing what to do! Now, hopefully some of the other 5 will pip, if not, I have 14 beautiful little babies and I'm super happy for a first hatch. Honestly I'm amazed any hatched for my first time!

Hey! I thought I had said NO to eggtopsy ... but if the 5 don't pip, I'm NOT opening them up (probably).

Even if you don't eggtopsy--be sure to tap them and listen for peeping or movement. Sometimes they are just slooooooooow.

I will thanks!!! Also once I get the dry chicks out, it will be easier to hear if they peep ... the others are pretty noisy, unless they are sleeping - LOL!

NoSkiveez - Yay, I am glad you have finally gotten some information, and SUPER glad cancer is not involved.

It must be such a relief to know something.
ETA: I just re-read your post. Does it mean you are still in limbo? That there is nothing they can do to help except remove the ovary? I hope not...

AZdreamer - Great photos and cute chicks. Congrats!

Nurseshelly - Congrats to you, too! Can't wait to see pics out of the incubator.

You both, Laree, and Mahalo are killing me with the successful hatches and newly hatched chick pics!

Tani has been setting up cages at the pima county fairgrounds all morning. Now its raining, cold, and miserable and the fam and i will be renting the new Narnia movie today.

It is my ad! They are adorable (They are named Phyllis and Diller) but they are too skittish for my tastes. I'd like to make room for chickens that I'll actually like. If I go outside with treats, they run away. I suspect it is because they can't see very well. I hear they'll calm down as they get older, but oh well. I think I'm going to stay away from ornamentals now.

I'm with Laree, listen for peeping. That's why I'm giving it another day. Sometimes I think I hear a scratching nose and then I don't hear it, so maybe, just maybe the birds are small and have not run out of room or air yet.

Nurseshelly-I think you did good first time hatch. As far as an eggtopsy I use to be grossed out by those kinds of things, but for some reason I no longer am. I opened the egg from point to round bottom on the one that died. The lining on that one was very thick also. It was thicker on the last few hatcher's. It must have been because I let the humidity out everytime I opened the top to get all the shedding out of the way. For the last two eggs I took all the living walking creatures out and cranked the humidity to 65%. Anyway, my DH didn't want to look. It was just a naked chick in a crowded egg, though he would like it...

Noskiveez- I'm glad your news is not devastating. I will be able to come by this week and bring home the rest of my family.

BTW you all, I got the chicken nest built just in time for the weather. I didn't get to fence it in but I see them all out under the shelter and in the nest part of it and Ricky Roo is not crowing like he usually does in the rain. It took me a while to build because my son whom broke his leg was helping me construct it until his accident and then it was all up to me. I'll get it painted when things dry out and send you all pictures...
