Arizona Chickens

Trader Joe's sells potted lavender for about $7.00. Their selection was much nicer than what I saw at the various plant nurseries. I bought a few last year and they are doing well for me without much attention. In France they use cut lavender flowers to keep scorpions away. I assume that would work here as well.

Leanna if I didn't greet you before, welcome!

Lavender grows fine out here. They use it to landscape apartment complexes.

The Lavender sugar was made with the flowers only. I bought it dried from Sprouts, since I don't have any landscape-y plants at my house. It is either veggies in the garden, or weeds.

Who needs flowers to keep scorpions at bay, when you have chickens? Our gynourmo roach and scorpion population has gone down exponentially since I started letting the chickens go out in the yard

When I walked out this morning, there was a hawk eating a pigeon right next to our chicken run. He left only feathers and flew off... So, I guess he's back.

BTW: the girls went over board laying yesterday afternoon and this morning.

I have 10 W/BW, 5 EEs and 3 BCMs first one with a PM can come get them for a test hatch.

RE Lavender

When I paid the bee guy to deal with our 1st invading colony, he told us to spray the area around any potential roof openings with lavender Fabuloso. It works; they don't come back to a spot that has been sprayed as long as they can smell it. The Fabuloso stuff is nasty (and WHY do they put purple cleaning fluid in a juice-shaped container!! - end of rant). I wonder if a simple lavender extract would work just as well.

On a tastier note, lemon cookies with lavender are delicious!

Seen two nesting pairs (Great Horned Owl)at two dif. HD last wk.The cashier said that they couldn't bother the chicks or the pallets that had the nest on them. The male(I guess) was over on one of the rafters in the shade.

One morning around 4am, when it was still dark, I was walking the dog and we started an own on the ground. It was huge. It easily could have carried off my little dog. We have hawks around here that will go after pigeons that are bigger then it is.

Mmmmm, that sounds SO GOOD!!

Regarding vaccinations and stuff, which ones are needed for our chicks/chickens here in AZ? I was reading Chix for Dummies and it was saying to ask around. They're being vaccinated for Marek's Disease already...am I good? Do I need the Cocchi stuff to put in the chick feed? Do they need to be de-wormed twice a year? Whats been your RL experience??
