Arizona Chickens

So behind from working again!

Pastrymama ... so sad to hear of flies and dog poo at neighbor's house ... you could try posting this poem on their front door and change garbage to dog poo in the poem: http://mysongbook.de/msb/songs/s/sarahcyn.html We had a neighbor who wouldn't take his trash out to the curb (just divorced, lost job, depressed, still had garbage service tho). He let the garbage can get overflowing, and then packed lawn bags of garbage on either side until the stink was incredible. We couldn't open our windows

. The Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout, She wouldn't take the garbage out poem worked wonders for us. We just taped it to his door, rang the doorbell and ran. Next day some friends of his came with a truck and hauled probably 6 pickup truck loads of garbage bags out. Sadly we had to put the poem up one more time before he foreclosed, he did take the trash out to the curb for a few months after the poem. His x wife was a Gilbert Police Officer and we decided it might be rude to call the police and tell them it smelled like something was dead over there - but we did consider it.

Tballchicky, sorry for the loss of your chicks ... that is so sad!

newchickmom09 - I can't believe the teacher thought she was trying to save the chicks

Sevensonm - there is a person with really sweet Australorps in Mesa - she has a craigslist ad in right now - we got one and they are beautiful. Also stopped the big hen from picking on anyone, I guess she just needed a big hen with her. Oh, there is a great feed store in QC, it is the Jim's Ace Hardware - they often have a good variety of chicks in - usually 4 or more varieties at once. They also have anything and everything you would ever need for pets, livestock, home and garden and of course hardware. They are like a petsmart, feedstore + home improvement store all in one.

Turkeybreeder - congrats on the turkey chicks!!!

Laree - silky chicks so cute!!! I need a silky!!!! Editing to clarify, I really really want a silky, probably don't have room for one - but I really need one!!!!

Bethany83 - I know you already had an answer on the bunny ... what we did was have an indoor cage and she was potty trained too for when we were home and able to confine the cat (he ate wild dinner most days). We also had an outdoor cage, if she was in it in the summer, we always froze either 2L soda bottles, or gallon milk jugs to put in when it was over 90 degrees. They lay against them to stay cool. Even with them, though you can tell they are hot in the afternoon. When I was a teenager, I would let my bunny sit on the top step of the pool to cool off after school, then rinse with the hose. Then she would run around the grass and lay in the zinnias (flowers? not sure of sp) and stay cool, and munch on them since they were edible. We did have a dog chew through our wooden fence, and try to rip her cage apart to eat her once at night. He did get about half of her cage apart, and tried to eat her feet through the wire (she just got some broken toe nails, but blood was everywhere!). She ended up standing in her food bowl until the dog went away - or that is what it looked like she did. She got a vet visit for a day, and was good as new

Mahonri - so far (4 days), 12 have chicks and veins, 2 have just veins, 2 are porous and can't tell, 4 marans shells too dark, one I forgot to write down what it was (LOL), 2 look clear, and 2 look like they have a blood ring - but not too experienced with that. Will of course recheck at day 10

and update! So far so good!!!! Thank you again for the eggs!!!

Phew! Time for bed!!!

Today when I went out to feed, I found my white crested black polish hen hanging upside down in the coop dead.
She evidently got a toe stuck in the wire and couldn't get loose. She was one of my prettiest and friendliest girls.

About teachers and chicks: The Pre-school teacher of a friends son decided to hatch chicks for a school lesson on life.
Every day she would let the children hold and touch the eggs in the incubator. Every evening she would
unplug the incubator because she didn't want the chicks to hatch at night when no one was there.
On the weekends she would send the eggs home with a parent. 5 weeks later, she wonders why
the classroom smells so awfull and why did none of the chicks hatch yet. She thinks that the
"farmer" gave her bad eggs.

WOW! My soapbox is calling. It's bad enough and entirely irresponsible to think you can just have a living being without learning how to take care of it FIRST. What really makes me mad here is that there is a room full of kids that actually learn from this. Just that in this case they learn GARBAGE. I taught elementary school for years and believe me, the kids soak up everything. In both these cases they learned the worst way to deal with it possible. And noboby is telling them "by the way, this is how NOT TO DO IT!" It's a disaster. What a waste of an opportunity.
We (BYC) should write a little chickie guidance booklet, distribute free to schools accross the country and offer one of us near the school to get together with interested/ignorant teachers to help (and avoid unnecesary deaths).

On a side note: I know it's radical, but that teacher sounds so stupid that I would not leave my kids in that classroom for one more second. Total lack of common sense and basic teaching skills. Bad combination.

If I get everything set up this weekend I will call Turkey Breeder she has some hens and chicks. That way I dont have to try and keep several new hens quarantined since they would all be from the same person. Just have to keep the chicks and hens seperate.
