I could pose the counter-arguement "God helps those who help themselves." That is: I think you would be better served with a little due dilligence.
Most of the laws in the US work on the "Buyer Beware" concept---you are assuming the person was attempting to be fraudulent with the transaction. It could be (and is likely) they were just ignorant. Perhaps a few pointed questions, BEFORE your next purchase, will help you determine the legitamacy and/or the level of honesty the seller holds themselves to---as well as their knowledge level.
