Most people that I know who grow tomatoes here grow them in winter; planting them in the early fall, after the heat drops some and harvesting through the spring until it gets too warrm. My old next door neighbors had dozens of tomato plants every winter, but never tried growing them in the summer. I do have two tomatoes growing in the breezeway between our house and garage, and they seem to be doing fine in the heat, but are in a sun-protected location. They may not be getting enough sun, although they do get plenty of light. One bush is much more a bush (Black Prince?), and has had two very tasty tomatoes. There are a couple of nice sized ones on it now, but they are still green. The other vine, which is getting VERY tall (it's at least 6 ft now, and may be taller) is supposed to do VERY WELL in heat--I think the variety name is Solar Fire? But it has yet to set a tomato. It did bloom much later than the other one. I got both plants at Lowes.
In the past, the only luck I've had here with tomatoes was cherry tomatoes. When I lived in Nebraska, I had bushels and bushels of cherry tomatoes, with only 2 or 3 plants.
