Arizona Chickens

Put a new AC unit in the coop again. This one is 10,000 BTUs compared with the 5,000 I had previously, and it has an energy saving setting with an Electronic thermostat. $100 extra but worth it.

Lost two more yesterday to the heat. (that's 8 total the past two weeks) Shouldn't loose anymore now.

Really hope the new AC will keep all your birds nice and cool now.

Reading about your losses makes me really worried. Did you get a handle on the IB?

Ugh....I got on a Kombucha kick in the early 90's......we cultured it and then drank the "brew" to be healthy...what was I thinking back then.

That was the wisdom of youth! I am feeling young also and think I should really get one! I have been battling with water kefir for almost a year and it's just not working... Meg? Can I, may I? Unless you live on the other side of the planet of course! Will travel some but not all distances for Kombucha.

Most people that I know who grow tomatoes here grow them in winter; planting them in the early fall, after the heat drops some and harvesting through the spring until it gets too warrm. My old next door neighbors had dozens of tomato plants every winter, but never tried growing them in the summer. I do have two tomatoes growing in the breezeway between our house and garage, and they seem to be doing fine in the heat, but are in a sun-protected location. They may not be getting enough sun, although they do get plenty of light. One bush is much more a bush (Black Prince?), and has had two very tasty tomatoes. There are a couple of nice sized ones on it now, but they are still green. The other vine, which is getting VERY tall (it's at least 6 ft now, and may be taller) is supposed to do VERY WELL in heat--I think the variety name is Solar Fire? But it has yet to set a tomato. It did bloom much later than the other one. I got both plants at Lowes.

In the past, the only luck I've had here with tomatoes was cherry tomatoes. When I lived in Nebraska, I had bushels and bushels of cherry tomatoes, with only 2 or 3 plants.

Just took 2 new pics of my little roos. Wish I could find them a home with a girlfriend, so I don't have to take them to the Stock Shop where they'll be rehomed without a buddy. I can't have roosters here.

This little guy is a Bantam Easter Egger - 10 weeks old - cute beard

His Girlfriend -- she has softer colors and will probably be a pretty little hen (she is not rumpless, just hasn't grown her tail back, since the feathers were plucked out by the others):

and a full size Easter Egger Roo - also 10 weeks old - he is much tamer than the 2 little bantams - he is easily picked up - also has a nice dark beard:

He can go to a new home with either an EE, BPR, or RIR mix female (or a French Black Copper Marans, but the BCM cost more):

I want each roo to go to his new home with a buddy --- i just relisted them on craigslist, but BYC prices are: Both roos together (assuming you already have plenty of female chickens for them) - Free (if you plan on keeping them both and giving them a good home)

A pair --- Each roo with 1 female buddy - $12
.....
