Arizona Chickens

When a rooster is crowing a bunch in the middle of the day, it's a good thing to hear the neighbor say, "I'd much rather hear that than barking dogs."

Happy birthday, Tani! Hope you get a couple of BQ silkies for a present.

So we get this young roo from constance a couple weeks ago and it has been smooth sailing and he is a cool cockerel to be sure, but he will only let my daughter hold him and that is once in a while. No sweat to me or her since we have enough hens we don't name but the special ones anymore, but the kids always have a favorite or two....Um....Well....Me too

Only two roos though Hugh and Max.

We just started free range in the last few hours of the day for Max the roo and his 17 ladies a few days ago and all again is going well and we sit them for much of the time while they are learning their way around. I know where am I going with this? The other laying flock gets put away early and they are meeting through the fence with no issues yet even between roosters.

I was sitting on our large sand pile watching them while taking a break today from the afternoon chores and Max sort of strolls up and I say "hey dude good job so far, just may keep ya" he cocks his head and struts right up and jumped onto my knee

Then wanted petted, but only for a few seconds then he was off being all bad *** again

Funny cause I jumped a little thinking he was on the attack or something...

Ya just gotta wonder what is ticking in that tiny skull sometimes, anyway he is a big hit here at B & M Chicken Ranch! Ya read the boy right constance and thanks again!

Does anyone in the Peoria area have any fertile eggs available? I have a die hard broody hen right now.

Please feel free to call me at 602-625-7946

Thanks.

Got my new chicken coop today. Rounded up the group of four week old juvenile delinquents. If anybody ever tells you breeds like leghorns, buttercups and fayoumis are flighty, believe them. They screamed and acted like they were going to detention camp! Hopefully, I'll be able to give them some more specialized attention while they get used to their new quarters, before they start free ranging again. I just love these breeds, but they are very different in temperament, especially compared to my pet breed, the OEGB.
They're all comfy, now, with a fan, fresh rice hulls and plenty of shade, tucked under the pine and citrus trees in the back of the garden. Next project is a 4 foot tall fence, to discourage them from going in the garden during times of the year when it is freshly planted. I'll also put shorter fences around each garden bed, but will pen them up when I've planted large areas, for instance, when I put in the fall garden greens and brassicas.
Planning to over seed the garden aisle ways with clover and rye for the cooler season when the Bermuda dies off, so they'll have to be penned for a little while to let they're new grasses get established. Does anyone else plant pasture or grasses for their chickens? It's really amazing how much fresh grass they eat each day. I make sure they get alfalfa hay and garden greens, as well.

DOH! I was just there today. I left a kid at 87th ave and Thomas, so if I have to pick him up tomorrow, I will call you.
