I turned on the sprinkler for the chickens to cool off. It's very scary but hopefully, they'll figure it out. The two Buttercups are prancing through it but everybody else is afraid. Why does that not surprise me?

Mama Hen Chris- that Hen House is utterly amazing! I'm absolutley embarrassed to post a picture of mine. Maybe I'll post it on the Red Neck thread with an alter. It's not that bad but it sure isn't a work of art.
Maybe this fall when it cools off I'll dress it up a little and even add a false roof line.

It is a Bull Snake or sometimes called a Gopher Snake and they can be very friendly. We have several on our property and they help with the rodents, never have bothered chickens or eggs...

I have had bull snakes eat eggs and even young chicks. I've even had them eat rather large guniea and peafowl chicks. I actually caught one in the act of swallowing a large peafowl chick in my barn in OK one time. Theyre great to have around to keep rodent population down but not so great around chicks.
I didn't realize we had them here, although I'm not surprised. Sometimes they can really mimic rattlesnakes, right down to rustling the grass to sound like a rattler.

Never mind. It's my cell phone. Stood right there and called, it didn't ring on their end.

Welcome to BYC, to the two Newbies from Flagstaff and Anthem!

Does anyone know where I can get Manna Pro or Nutrena in the Mesa area? Or, a local/AZ brand of feed? Ideally, I'd like to have a feed mill make a custom grind for me when I get my broiler chicks. I was not happy with Purina Flock Raiser. Not to mention the price!

I'd be willing to drive to Casa Grande or Buckeye to pick up a couple of months worth of feed if I have to.

as far as i know, the only store in the metro area to have manna pro is the feed barn up by me, 23rd ave and lone tree(deer valley). nutrena is az feeds(supposed to be crap). i have no clue if anyone in casa grande has manna pro, what type are you looking for? i frequent tucson, that's why i asked yesterday if any of the stores down there had it.

I have heard they would eat eggs, but haven't seen it so far (that we know of) We have one here we call Charlie and he has a stub tail and has been here the 15 years we have owned this home, he is easily over 6 feet long stubby tail and all.... He will let the kids actually pick him up and bother him for a long time with no agression shown, then they let him go in the barn.

Hi Everyone,
I just joined BYC and ordered my first chicks. They shipped out today from mypetchickens.com. Do you think they will arrive tomorrow or Wednesday? Of course I am a little behind schedule (as usual) so I am just heading out to the Higley Feed Store to purchase starter and such. Any advice you have on what particular brand of starter feed I should get, or any advice at all would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

welcome mjaz, I would guess Wednesday for your new chicks. As far as feed goes kinda up to you but you will get some great advice from a lot of others on here. What city are you in?
Scratch Wednesday, I say Tuesday since they shipped today.

Manna Pro chick starter. Higley carries King Feeds, which is a super brand, but the YQ+ (a feed/supplement for stress) I bought was super infested with bugs. Sharon at The Feed Barn works very hard to make sure her feed does not become bug infested--ordering it more frequently in hot weather when bugs flurish.
