Holy Crow!

This sounds way more complex than fill'n up a feeder with starter!

Meggie Moringa-seed gave me a half of a bag (THANKS MEG!!!) of O.H. Kruse organic feed - it's pretty finely milled, like sand. She uses it as starter.

clover...
...alfalfa, yogurt, rice hulls, sprouts?
I've never even heard of fenugreek!

Am I about to kill a bunch of chicks?

Oh and BTW - My countdown was based on hatching on the 14th and a pessimistic 2 days shipping. I too am anxious...

Yep, only on this forum!

Mike,
I feed my babies lots of sprouts and goodies too! They also love birdie corn bread. lol.. My friend used to laugh at all the stuff I gave my baby parakeets and cockatiels.

Where do you get fenugreek and the Alfalfa and clover? I've never tired them.
My birds all love mung bean. Plain bird seed (for parakeets and finches) sprouts too. And I grow bird seed and feed it green!

And what are kefir grains? I'm hearing of alot of new things and now i'm anxious to try them! lol...

Fenugreek tea is pretty good... If you drink enough of it, it increases lactation. If you give your chickens enough of it, maybe you can have an ice cold glass of chicken milk?

kefir grains are little globules of micro organisms that turn milk into kefir. Ok, that's not a very good description, but I'm very much a newbie to kefir. You just take these "grains" (they're not grains at all, but have a grainy appearance) and put them in milk (skim, low fat or whole) and set it out on the kitchen counter for about 24 hours, strain out the grains and put them with more milk. The strained kefir can then be put in the fridge (or I think even kept on the counter) for a second fermentation. It supposed to be good for you. I just love the taste of it. I'm sure mclevinson or other experienced kefir fermenters could extol the virtues of kefir better than I.

TT! :

So...I shouldn't drink too much of it?

My mil decided that since I like cats that she should provide me with all sorts of cat decor. Mind you, I said I like cats, the living, breathing, scratching, purring kind, not inanimate decor. That was long before I had chickens. I actually prefer to choose my own decor, whether or not it relates to a hobby is immaterial.

Some years ago, when I was really into fishing, my mother bought me a lamp in the shape of a realistic looking large mouth bass. It had a hideous green ruffled shade. It didn't go with anything in our house--not even remotely, but that didn't stop my mother. What the heck am I going to do with a bass lamp? It now resides in the back workshop in the garage. I can't bear to get rid of it because she was so happy to give it to me. I just know that someday she'll be here and ask, "where's your fish lamp?"

Are you sure it doesn't have a button somewhere to start it moving and singing? I gave one of those (plaque version, not a lamp) to my dad for a gift, but it was intended mostly as a gag gift to play with for awhile, then to hide in a seldom used drawer, only to be rediscovered a few years later, enjoyed for awhile, then repeat. At least that is what I THOUGHT would happen. It's hanging on their wall

I need advice from all of you really smart DIYers out there...

I aquired a 275 gal IBC water tote yesterday. I need to get inside to scrape the bottom, so I have to cut it. I can't decide between the top or the side. The sides are smooth, and I have a piece of heavy duty flexible plexiglass. Could I cut a hole in the side smaller than the plexiglass, then glue the plexiglass from the inside so the pressure of the water would press it outward and tight against the side? The other option is cutting the top. The top is contoured, so I could never reattach it. It would have to be open forever more, but I could put screen over it to keep out mosquitoes. I'm ok with it not having a top, but there are two metal rods that go through the top presumably to keep it from sagging or wanting to bow outward. I don't know how important this is. If I lose the top, will it put too much strain on the frame? If I cut the side will I ever get a good seal? What adhesive would bond well?

I don't know what to do!

It looks similar to this http://www.fryertofuel.com/used_tote_tank_IBC.html

I would first consider making a "long-distance" scraping tool. For example attach a putty knife to a broom stick etc. It will be harder to clean that way BUT you don't have to fix the tank afterwards and it is alway a problem to get something water tight again. If you decide to cut a hole in the wall consider the shape! It cannot be round because you cannot get a round coverplate into a hole that is smaller than the plate. Square works if you insert diagonally. Also make sure you are not glueing the coverplate while you are still inside...

pimachickens, How thick is the plastic? Will you ever want to get back inside to clean it again? If I were to cut a hole, I'd want it to be in the top for structural integrity and also because you'd loose less volume. I would somehow make a circular hole from above--get it nearly perfect, and then fit it with a pvc pipe with a flange on it so that you could cap it off. You could even silicone it around the edge were the plastic and pvc meet. I'll bet you could cut the hole in the side as long as it is up higher (where pressure will be lower) and patch it as you suggest using silicone. I've had very large aquaria where the glass was held together by little more than silicone. I've been thinking of getting some of those containers myself to use to raise tilapia. I'll bet Mikey D would have good ideas about how to do this.

Sonoran Silkies, That's Loudmouth Billy Bass!

I always thought I'd get one of those sooner or later, but thankfully I didn't. That's so funny that he has it hanging on his wall.
