Arizona Chickens

You could take a regular nest box, raise the front just a little and put a small opening in the back end for the eggs to roll out into a tray. The guy at Mesa Feed Barn is building nest boxes. I bet if you give him a picture, he could build you some. He built my coop and did it to my specs, did a nice job.
You can also take away all nest boxes and bedding for a week, forcing them to lay on the ground in the bottom of the coop. No way to roll the egg up into the corner of a nest box, no way to break it, if its a strong shell. They have to get it into a corner to gain purchase. Once he learns that the egg laying "call" doesn't mean free food anymore, he will probably give it up and you can go back to nest boxes, preferably with dark curtains.
I've not ever had this problem but this is what I've read to do. I'm surprised, with all the different types of fowl I've had and as little commercial feed that I used to feed that I've never had egg eaters. I even feed the eggshells back to the flock, not being very careful about crushing them.

Mikey,

I'm with Becky. I don't have meaties because it is hard to not get attached to those cutsie little chicks. But that's me, and that's why my meat turkeys live at Laree's house!!!

Most people raise them on 20-22% protein. Some of the organic feed has better protein. Also, the big reason they feed them that way is just to get them to grow fast. If you don't care about rapid growth, it doesn't matter. Peri Sally, I don't really care if I have a chicken ready to butcher in 42 days or less. I'm happy with 12 weeks, more is fine, even. That's why I think these red broilers will suit me just fine. They grow slower.

So does that mean that this little gal is really a guy?

She's 1 of the 4 I got from AZKat that are about 3 weeks old now. I picked out what I think are 2 RIR/Red Stars and 2 mysteries. Can anyone give me an educated guess at what she might be?

Here's the other one that I'm not sure about. She's the biggest of the new bunch. Any ideas?

I'm not really good at it either, I just read that early feathering in most breeds is a good sign and it's been true, so far, for the chicks I've raised.
That said, my GSLs hardly have any feathers yet and I know they are pullets.

You could try posting in the "What Breed or Gender is this?" thread.

Becky,

That's so funny, I also have some GSLs and they took FOREVER to get feathered out. They also came from Ideal so I don't know if it's just the strain they are using or what. They hatched 3/14 and they JUST started laying.

So...we had to "dispatch" a bully rooster the other night because he attacked my 5 year old & got her pretty good

We just buried it because it was late & I didn't want to deal with it anymore (yes, I was be snarky)

I realize in hindsight that I could've at least feed the jerk to the dogs or something.

Well, I've decided that I need to learn how to cull a chicken & clean it and whatever else has to be done So, is there anybody here that would like to give me a tutorial or point me in the direction of one? I found one link online but I couldn't get past the 1970's lingo

Thanks!!!
