I would be interested in a pullet, when you are ready to cull those from your project. Can't take any roos though, I already have a surplus of those....

Someone a while back said the were able to get wood pallets from stores to build coops...i've called but have not found a store that wants to give them up....Does anyone recall how they got the pallets and from where.

My FIL is the receiving manager at Total Wine at San Tan Mall and he has given me permission to go take whatever I want. If you don't live anywhere near San Tan Mall, there are other Total Wine stores you can try.

Hey crazy...will your FIL let other chicken people have pallets? I live near SanTan....shop there too! love Total Wine. I was there Saturday but did not think of them as a source for pallets....I did finally convince hubby to build our coop with pallets...recycling!

How do I upload a pic of my babies to this site? I tried but the file size is too large. What size do I need to resize to?

I just bragged in another section, but I want to brag here, too. I got my first 2 hens today!

I found them on craigslist and met the guy at the farmer's market... he was there selling organic eggs

We named them General Tso and Sesame

The joys of owning chickens...

I just had to drain my hen's abdomen tonight. She has had a swollen belly for a couple of weeks and I thought she might be eggbound. Felt around but couldn't find an egg. I put her on general antibiotics in case she had some kind of infection. Her comb and wattles are bright red, she is alert and eating, but not keeping any weight on. I read on BYC that they can get ascites and that the water just needs to be drained.

Luckily, my neighbor works at a vets office, and she had one of the needles used for drainage. Reba, my red sexlink hen, is doing fine, though not quite sure what to make of the water still dripping from her. I made her some oatmeal with yogurt, with the hopes that she will eat and gain some weight.

Hopefully, she will be able to get back with the flock in a week or two. Though, my cat, Jake, is really taken with her. She has been in my kitchen in a carrier and he likes to keep an eye on her. Last week, I had given her a warm bath in case she was eggbound, and while I was holding her wrapped in a towel, Jake came right up and sniffed her and stretched his paw to touch her. It is kinda cute.

Anyway, just thought I'd share my chicken experience with you all.

they are the greatest

However I do have a question
I am currently building their coop and am wondering if anyone knows where cheap poultry netting can be purchased?

a2ms4chickens - sorry about your chicken. I hope she gets better. Cute story about the cat.

johnrobertiii - I am not even sure exactly what poultry netting is. I use a bird netting designed to keep birds off fruit trees and out of gardens as a fence to keep my hens in half my yard instead of all of it. It was $25 but was a HUGE piece. The sun may degrade it and I may have to replace it, but it was something I had bought anyway and easy enough for Mom and I to put it up as a "fence". Actually, I wasn't feeling very perky that day and my 70 plus mother did most of it. I already had some lightweight things we were able to use as posts. Definitly not predator proof, but fortunately those predators are not in the center of Mesa. When I used chicken wire, I got it at home depot. I didn't price check though.

Nessa might have some ideas. She has some different kinds of wire/netting/cloth stuff at her place.
