Arizona Chickens

I am currently in Vegas right now, I just graduated but I still need to take my board exams........ Scheduled that Feb 2nd. Maybe I can start working and get a paycheck?????

I live in Yuma Az. and commute a bit. I know for a fact there is a Vegas group of chicken owners. I am personal friends with one of them and we have traded chickens, chicks, and fertilized eggs.

really, there doesn't seem to be any difference in raising chickens in Vegas as there is in Yuma, though I do know that the feed stores in Vegas stop selling chicks in Oct/Nov and they are as expensive as hell! In Yuma, that is when they start selling baby chicks!!! and they are only about $1.5-$2.6 or there about each, depending on what you get.

Look for "Nevadans" under the "where are you" section, where you found this thread. I was indirectly instrumental in getting that started, now there is like 30 pages of threads. Good luck with the chicks....

Does anyone breed SLW? I got some day olds that are 4 weeks old tomorrow and i KNOW the SLW is a roo. It breaks my heart though because he is my favorite! He is so sweet and calm. He's really the only one that will let me hold him and he's quiet about it. Won't scream like all the others do when I pick them up. Is there anyone out there that can give him a good home? I REALLY don't want him to be dinner but I just can't keep him in my HOA.

I will get a pic up soon.

So I have one girl laying that I know of. The 4 eggs on the left are for SURE Lucy's (CQ). She ALWAYS lays in the box on the left. Today I went out and there was an egg on the RIGHT... which was weird, to begin with, but then I noticed that it was speckled and none of Lucy's have ever been speckled. Not even her awkward first egg.

Here is a better close up.

What do you guys think? Do you think I have a second layer?

No question is a dumb question right???? What is an SLW? I can not hve roos either sorry...

Silver Laced Wyandotte. Here is a pic I just took tonight.

You could try Chrystalgail for the SLW, but I am not sure. I will call her. I picked up a SLW at Western Ranchman, and the DH named her Tender. She's only a week or so old, but she's a fav too.

I hope you find a good home for him.

If I were a chicken, I would swoon.

Well, the removal of the evil gamey roos seems to have worked. We got 5 eggs today, and sitting here typing, I hear an egg song. AT 8:30 pm! One of the eggs I picked up today felt speckled and super-calcified. I hate to think what the extra coating really was, with the workout the hens were getting. bleh, I gotta go wash my hands again....

Hello all..... Just putting it out there, I have a very nice blue Silkie that could use a good home....He (yep, its a 'roo) is about 5-6 weeks, showing pretty good foot feathering, dark skin/eyes, and developing a nice crest so far. PM me or shoot me an e-mail if you have any questions, I don't have pics tonight but can get together by tomorrow

Thanks budkingston. I'm so glad that thread was started. I've been on there a lot already but it seems like there are more chicken people in the northern part of the state than down here in the south and well...that makes quite a difference as far as temps go at least. Plus, geographically many of you are closer to me than they are, not to mention that AZ has a special place in my <3.

I really want some and the weather here has been GREAT!!!

Speaking of trading chickens, chicks and eggs with Vegas people ... I saw some of those awesome EE/Leghorn crosses today. They are super friendly and CUTE!!!

Mahonri, those are some beautiful birds. I'm so jealous.
