Arizona Chickens

It is a good thing i live 4 hours away or I could see myself getting into trouble with you guys!!

it's official. me and laree taking a simple trip to pick up a few chicks = A BAD IDEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! we only took 3 of the 5 kids between the two of us(i had a sick one and twin B just couldn't be bothered) but they ran all over that place and got into trouble, climbing into horse stalls and who knows what else as we scoped out the merchandise. i brought home 4 basque chickies and 2 white ameraucana chickies and laree got some hatching eggs from the biggest fluffy butts i have ever seen in my life. they sure were pretty. maybe she'll toss a girl over my fence

What beautiful pictures! Your son looks like he's in love with Tiger eye! I bet he likes doing the work with them too!
My chicks are 'flighty' and won't stand to be held for long. My granddaughter LOVES them-and named them all. I am thinking of getting two more pullets that AREN'T Leghorns that the kids can actually love and handle. Any recommendations as to a "best" breed for this? My daughter in law has Serama's that are VERY sociable and actually act like they like being handled but I'm afraid they'd be too small for a coop with four Leghorn pullets.
I have seen characteristics of many of the breeds but it's also hot here as you know and I'd like a breed that tolerates the heat too. I'd appreciate any feedback!

So I posted in the Coop forum my new coop. I NEED your guys help especially with some ideas. LOTS of pics. let me know what you think..

Thnx
The coop looks great! I posted in the coops thread but it all sums up to - more, way more ventilation.

Excellent job and that thing is HUGE!

I love cohins, giant or the banties. they are all really social, even more than my seramas.

Yes, my kids love their chickens! As far as the best breed for handling, that is entirely up to how much they are held (the younger the better). It is best to get them when they are a day or so old, and hold them ALL the time (my kids LOVED that I told them, "Hold the chickens more" instead of "Ok, put the poor thing down and leave it be for a while".). The chicks that my kids favored the most and held all the time, are the friendliest. The chicks that they didn't hold as much, are more flighty. I have Red Stars, Black Stars, Barred Rocks, and Blue Wyandottes. They are all pretty sociable, but some more then others due to the reason I mentioned.

So there was Mikey trying to install lighting in the coop so chickies will think longer days = more eggie-wegs!

Seemed so simple.

Knockout in sub panel - conduit to double gang box - conduit to 2 ceiling fixtures. How tough is that?

Tammy: "Shouldn't the switch box go outside the coop so we (I love the we) don't have to go inside to use it?"

So here is Mikey, waiting for the next time he can get at the coop in the daylight - Prolly next Saturday.
