Arizona Chickens

sonoran silkies,
anything painted ready to come home with me yet?

and mikey, you really should go look at her yard. preferably when she's there so it's not stealing when you take home a box of silkies and pass them off as poodles to tammy.

Pastry, this is you!

U2!

MAHONRI, you're right Tanichca's birds do look like pullets...and I was in Tucson today! I totally would have picked them up for you! Darn! I'm still deciding if I will get the incubator, if I do, it will be the Genesis. I'm scared about what I'll do if I can't sell all the chicks, assuming I'll be successful at hatching. :/

I didn't quarantine. I guess that was dumb.

I sure wish I was better at remembering names, I believe she is on this site as well. She (the breeder) recommended the tetracycline for 10 days as a preventative but I didn't want to medicate for the heck of it.

The two are getting it now & I've been contemplating doing the whole flock just in case.

sadness...

I should have mentioned, I'd put the older cockerels in the coop/run with the big girls, and they were all fine.

My chickens won't sleep or roost at night in their coop. They sleep together on the ground in their fenced in run. Is this normal? I keep picking them up and moving them into the coop but they keep getting out and sleep in the run. I don't keep food or water in the coop so I don't lock them in at night cause I don't want to get up at the crack of dawn to let them out. Their coop is in an enclosed 6 x 14 foot dog run so safety isn't an issue. Do I just have strange chickens or what? They will be 12 weeks old tomorrow.

Mind didn't start roosting until they were 4 - 5 months old.

Amidst the carnage & disease...

I stopped by the house with 2 co-workers,

(one plays some FPS video game and gets bonus points if he posts a pict of himself with a chicken)

and there were four eggs waiting for me!

A new Papa's Peepers record!

I've always wondered this, esp. because I've heard so many different explanations. Soooooo does the hen stay fertile to a given time period or is it based on the amount of eggs layed? the most recent explanation I heard was once she laid an egg she was unfertile until the old rooster did his thing?
