Arizona Chickens

I missed your entrance Magic. Welcome to the best thread!

Thanks, Mikey. I've been lurking on this thread for a long time. Finally joined BYC yesterday so I could subscribe to it. I did post an intro last night under New Member Introductions, but I forgot to introduce myself here as well. Ooops... Sorry!

Short intro: I live on the southwest side of Tucson with four chickens: 2 reds of some sort, a barred rock, and an easter egger (who is either not laying at all, or lays brown eggs). They're all about 2 years old. Got them from a friend last fall. He had to move and couldn't take them with him. So far I have been able to fight off chicken math, but I'm not sure how much longer I can hold out. I'm hooked.

The first step to admitting that you have a problem with chickens is getting some more chickens.

Chicken math:

1 chicken doesn't really count, because they're social animals and so you need at least 4.

so 4=1

Since 4 is a pretty small number, and maybe some of them don't get along with others, or are taking a break from egg laying, you had better make sure your chickens have a good group of friends to choose amongst.

so 8=3

And since by now you've gotten a couple at different ages, you might want to get a couple more at varying ages to make sure everyone has a buddy.

so 15=5

And if you spend too much time on BYC looking at chicken pictures or you go to a poultry show and see chickens you've never seen before, you might have to get a couple, just because who knows when you'll get the chance next, right?

so 25=7.

Then I only have 7 chickens!

And I'm only getting 3 more!

The control tower will be so pleased to hear that!

The Pima County Fair is coming up soon. Years ago I went and there were LOTS of chickens (and pigeons and other birds) on display. I fell in love with the prettiest pair of chickens I ever saw. I think they were Dutch silver (silverwing?) bantams. That started me on the path to wanting chickens. Be careful what you wish for. Now I have four chickens inherited from a friend who had to move. I can feel the chicken math kicking in. And the fair is coming up again. The problem is, every time I've been to the fair since that year I haven't found much in the way of poultry. I thought I just wasn't going on the right day, but I don't see any mention of poultry on the county fair website, either. Does anyone know if there is a poultry component to the livestock show? And if so, when is it? Sheep and pigs are ok, but I'd rather see chickens.

Yes, there is poultry at the Pima County Fair. I haven't shown there before, so I cannot tell you how many will be there, or what kind. I'll look up the dates tomorrow--I have the flyer.

As for the variety of Dutch, probably silver duckwing from what you describe.
