[Sonoran Silkies]

The scorpions are out and about. I found one inside the youngest chick brooder last night. I had found one chick unexpectedly dead an hour or so earlier. Then found another two quite lethargic. As I was taking them out to try to figure out what was wrong, I saw one of the larger chicks in that brooder with something large in its mouth. Caught the chick (it didn't want to be caught) and discovered it was a bark scorpion. Manged to get the scorpion away from the chick without being stung and thoroughly smooshed it (the scorpion, not the chick) I think it was already close to dead. The lethargic ones died not too long after, and I checked the brooder again before going to bed. Two more not doing well, including the one that I took the scorpion from. This morning the other one looks like it never had any problems, but the one who had caught it is not doing well. Hoping that the venom will work its way out over the next few hours. So, I lost three and may lose a fourth; two paints, a chocolate partridge and the blue who caught the beast. The first three were only a week old.

Dang, I have NEVER found scorpions in with chicks before! Upset and frustrated. Bug sprayers were out last week!

Not good. Sorry about your loss. Do you use DE? Not that it will kill them instantly. I've got to get some DE and put it all around. I have red ants and we have a birthday party next weekend.

That was awesome. Makes me want to go take a welding class. I think I'd do better at a wood shop but it was a great plug.

Oh NO! I am so sorry. I didn't think scorpions would bother chicks. The hens kill and eat them with out trouble don't they? Poor little fuzz butts!


About that egg, Thanks, I have never seen a pullet eggs so small. It was half the size of most. It is quail size but not shape and color is wrong. I may just crack it open. I don't really think the old guy has any young hens. His all were laying when he got the flock. I guess if you can have a overly large egg you can get a very small one also. Sure didn't hurt passing that one!

We have had luck with children's Benadryl (diluted) ....that was with fully grown or at least 'adolescents' though....

I thought about benedryl, but all we have is pills, and these chicks are so tiny I figured that would probably kill them. The blue one didn't make it

I am getting caught up with loving to many of the breeds! I have GOT to stop doing that!

I have had turkeys before. We had a white turkey hen called Butterball. Just as loving as Blue Bell is. She lived a long life for a turkey.
I have had half a thought of selling off my silkies and going to turkeys and serama's but then I look at my fuzz butts and don't know if I could let them go!
