We heard our first crow this evening. Well, attempt at a crow. It was from my prettiest blue Marans. He's 9 weeks old. How long before the crow is "my neighbors know I have a roo" type of crow? Thanks!

Is it maybe this?? Not sure but the coloration and shape is kinda similar and makes me think you picked a young version of a cushaw? I'll be interested to see how it is if you eat it? (thinking maybe like a zucchini or yellow squash??)

Oh, and I am definitely not an expert in any way, shape or form....I was just curious and searched for it![]()
Hey Gallo and any others who want to weigh in, How do you keep the birds from eating your grapes? As soon as mine begin to ripen the stupid wild birds gobble them up.
They've grown up a chain link fence and onto a trellis so I believe bird netting is out of the question.
Welcome DrJennidvm! Sorry if this forum seems intimidating. I don't think it is hostile... I just think we are very much like a family, or more precisely...siblings. Of course there are disagreements. There are times that you read a post and the steam jets out of your ears, or you roll your eyes, or think "yeah right...whatever". But there are just as many times that you shoot coffee (or wine, depending on the time of day) out your nose laughing so hard at something someone said. And no matter what, we all care when someone suffers a tragedy, or has sick animals, or loses a pet. We may be dysfunctional, but it's just the AZ family way. Welcome to the family, glad to have you!https://www.backyardchickens.com/forums/posts/add/threadId/31227/toquote/9108387
Thanks for saying what I've been thinking! I have been lurking for a couple months and this forum seems like a tough nut (or egg) to crack.
I'm from up north by Prescott and am new to chickens. I have an 8 yr old daughter that is sharing this wonderful chicken experience with me (my hubby is indifferent, but very supportive of my animal obsessions). We have 3 16 wk old pullets (2 barred rocks and a blue andalusian) and 2 7 wk old gold sexlink pullets. I had no idea what wonderful and fun pets chickens were!!! Ours live in a converted horse stall with a newly constructed outside run for the daytime. We live surrounded by BLM land, so predators are a huge concern, and I'm not brave enough to free range the girls yet. Please, accept me into the "club" and I'll keep doing my chicken math homework!.
